Derm vs. psych

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have been accepted to a derm program, but am reconsidering psych. Pros/cons/similarities/differences?

I actually tried deciding between the two for a very long time. Everyone else has looked at me like an idiot for comparing the two...but if this is not a troll post I am glad you posted it. My final decision was simple; id much, much rather deal with and study about kids and the brain (child psych) than about the skin every day, in residency and beyond.

Assuming you're not a troll. . .

. . . "post-purchase dissonance" is common after major decisions. This may be what you're feeling right now about Derm. Give it a shot - it will be your only one. Psych will always be there for a dermatologist.

However, I think you're probably a troll because most people don't "get accepted into derm programs" - they say they matched.

Not a troll post--honestly considering the switch

I also loved dermatology in med school. I would have considered it strongly if my grades were more competitive for it. There's actually quite a bit of overlap between the two fields. Check out psychodermatology. Many psychiatric conditions manifest as skin pathology, so you won't be divorced from it entirely if you do derm.

Overall, I'd do derm. I love the fact that it's visual-based, has procedures, and is easily billable.

I agree. I can see how someone could be interested in both fields, but you must have put a lot of work into getting into derm, so give it a chance before you switch.
