Hey all,

My gf is in corporate private practice and has decided after 3 years that she wants to pursue vet dermatology. She's always been interested, but was eager to get out into practice at first and worried about the financial drawbacks of residency. She realizes now that she would be happier doing sub-specialty and doesn't want to put off the training any longer.

A bit about her:
Top 3 vet program in the country (grad in 2012)
Inducted into veterinary honors society
5th in her class
3 years in practice
She intends to start shadowing people in our area on her days off 1 day/week.
She attended the national derm conference this year and made some contacts.

My questions:
1) what makes one competitive for derm?
2) Does she need research experience?
3) should her letters come from PROFESSORS from her vet school or people she's worked for/with.
4) How many derm letters does she need?

Thanks for all your help.

DrZ.

I think these questions would be best answered by boarded dermatologists since they would know what is needed the best.

Where can I find one of those? Is this the wrong forum? I'm not terribly familiar w the veterinary forums...

If she has made some contacts to shadow some dermatologists it would be best for her to chat with them about it. That's just my opinion, but they would be able to give her the best idea of what is required to be a competitive applicant. There are some residency-trained regulars here that may be able to chime in something, but no dermatologists I don't think. Fields vary greatly, so it's always best to ask them to get the best idea.

Ahh, I see. I'm usually on the ophtho MD forums and we have a bunch of residency trained people. Well... It was worth a shot...

Thanks 🙂

Yeah, the vet residency world is much, much smaller than med. I hope she's able to find the answers she's looking for.
