Dermatology research volunteer opportunity at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center

Location: Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center, 1515 North Vermont Avenue, 5th Floor, Los Angeles, CA 90027
Mentor: Jashin J. Wu, M.D.
Number of positions: 2
Availability: After July 1, 2015
Duration: 12 months
Deadline: Jan 31, 2015
Interviews: mid Jan 2015
Decision about the positions: mid Feb 2015

Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center seeks a medical student dermatology research volunteer for 12 months beginning in early July 2015 under the direction of Jashin J. Wu, M.D., who is Director of Dermatology Research at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center. Dr. Wu has published 2 psoriasis textbooks and has over 160 book chapters or Pubmed articles that are published, in press, or submitted, with some of his work published in New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, JAMA Dermatology, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD), and British Journal of Dermatology. Dr. Wu is a Councilor of the International Psoriasis Council (IPC), a Medical Board member of the National Psoriasis Foundation, a Board Member of the California Society of Dermatology & Dermatologic Surgery, and President-Elect of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Dermatological Society.

The medical student will serve as a research volunteer for ongoing Phase III-IV clinical trials for psoriasis. This position entails operation of the clinical trial protocols (e.g. preparing for patient visits, managing research databases, shadowing Dr. Wu in research clinic, as well as other research tasks). As a research volunteer, the student will have the opportunity to work on retrospective cohort studies to study psoriasis patients from the Kaiser Permanente Southern California database that has 3.76 million patients as of June 31, 2014. There has been an average of 3.2-3.7 million patients in the electronic database every year since 2004. The research volunteer will also have review articles about psoriasis and case reports where they can serve as first author. It is a major priority that the medical student will author at least 10 publications. In addition, the research volunteer can attend the monthly Kaiser Permanente dermatology Grand Rounds, and Dr. Wu will notify the student if there are any interesting patients in regular clinic.

ACGME frowns upon research volunteer/assistant positions that are guaranteed into dermatology residency, so completing the research volunteer position will not guarantee acceptance to the Kaiser Permanente dermatology residency, but the research volunteer position is geared towards a Match at any program (including the Kaiser Permanente dermatology residency). Two prior research fellows and one prior research volunteer student have matched into dermatology residencies, and two prior volunteer students are currently in the application process.

Applicants must be enrolled in a U.S. allopathic medical school. Only students who will have completed the 3rd year of medical school by the start of the research position are being considered at this time. *Please note that foreign medical students/ graduates, osteopathic students/ graduates, and U.S. citizens who are students/ graduates of non-U.S. allopathic schools are not eligible. Interns and residents in other specialties are not eligible.

Applicants should send a letter of interest, CV with USMLE board Step 1 score, and medical school transcript to [email protected]. No hard copies, please.
