Hi!

Hope everyone is having a nice summer. I’m really interested in pursuing dermatology, and I am wondering if anyone has any insight on how competitive this specialty is? I’ve worked with a dermatologist and I loved it, and I could really see myself doing dermatology as a career. Obviously I’m going to stay open minded to other career paths and not completely go tunnel vision on derm, I’m just wondering if anyone has any advice? I’m thinking I’ll do vet school -> rotating internship -> residency (or derm specific internship if I don’t match). Is this reasonable?

Derm is middle of the road as far as competitiveness in getting a residency. Not as hard to get as some but they don't just give them out to anyone either.

Sounds good. Veterinary school is definitely the first step.

Good luck!

You can find data on the VIRMP website to give you a rough idea of competition. Last year, there were 15 residency slots and 19 applicants. Not the craziest odds, but I don't know enough about derm to tell you what it takes to get in the field.
