MUSC filled. Any news on Geisinger, MD Anderson, or MSKCC?

It is VERY ironic that there appears to be such an intense competition to be the future dermatopathology employees of dermatology office labs.

I began my career about 40 years ago with very poor job prospects and finished it still with poor job market.

I appear that the powers that be conspired, unconscious or consciously, to cook the books/stats to over-train and perpetually proclaim, for decades, a very rosy job market, without any regard to how their action would destroy careers of many. In a financial world, they would have ended in jail.

i’m not saying anything about these guys above, it’s a tough specialty to know and precarious at many times. There is however a cohort of medical students who apply to pathology as a “backdoor to dermatology” via a dermpath fellowship, which might feed into the competitiveness along with competing with clinical dermatologists as well. Unfortunately these applicants are usually extremely arrogant and are talking day 1 of intern year about the multimillion dollar dermpath lab they are planning on starting and how smart they are for figuring this out over the suckers who matched into clinical fields. The gunners of pathology, so to speak. Soon they realize they are about 30 years too late and before they can start pumping out case reports with the fellowship director (who is going to pick a dermatologist over them if he gets the chance for his fellowship), the 10 million placentas need to be grossed. This Is usually the worst type of co-resident to have, as besides being lazy, they’re also resentful douches.

What I find bizarre is that, if i’ve got my dates right, it appears these residents are expected to apply for this fellowship early on in their second residency year. They know almost nothing about the field at that time, most specifically, the business end of things in path in general and derm path in particular.

Fellowship apps are typically done around 20-24 months prior to the fellowship's start date. So for AP/CP residents, that means applying at the end of PGY2/beginning of PGY3, and for AP-only residents, that means applying at the end of PGY1/beginning of PGY2.

Yes, it's way too early. My trainee colleagues in other fields were shocked when I told them I was applying that early, because in their specialties they apply for their fellowships in their last year of training (similar to med students applying at the beginning of their 4th year).

I never got an email from WashU and Virginia. How did you find out they're filled?

Duke filled
Anything from UPMC or Texas programs?

This has been an ongoing thing since when I interviewed in 2013. No match is happening this year. It is rolling as it has been.
Last year they got a lot of program directors to agree to a match wherein they wouldn't extend offers until mid November.. and many programs stuck with it. It was terrible. The ASDP actually still lists several programs participating in this "match"..
