a friend of min got in to his state school recently. since the tuition is low, he is sure he will not get fin aid (parents are rich). should he or does he still need to fill out the fafsa and stuff?

nobody needs to fill out fafsa. But if he wants stafford loans, he has to fill it out. His parents being rich won't affect his chance of stafford loans. It just means he probably won't be eligible for any need-based aid. He can totally skip the parental info if he wants. Anyone who wants to can skip parental info; there is a chance that might be passing up some free money however.

Even if his parents are going to foot the whole bill, it would still make sense for him to take out the max in subsidized stafford loans($8500). Interest free money probably shouldn't be passed up.

so when filling out the fafsa, he can skip the parents info and still be elegible for stafford loans which are not need based. right? can you give more info about the stafford loans and what they depend on? who gives the money ultimately...the school or govt? so does the school look at your fafsa?

Why do people feel the need to talk about themselves in the third person? These are perfectly reasonable questions--there's no reason to be embarrassed.

A friend of mine says "you (and your friend) do not need to fill out the parental info to get stafford loans. They are available to anyone who is entering medical school. They are gov't loans, but sometimes the schools offer loans too."
