Hey guys. It saids that the n=3 subshell can contain 18 electrons. I know that it is possible for the entire atom with n=3 to contain 18 electrons but don't you think that the n=3 subshell should only contain 8 electrons???

n=3 means l = 2.

l of 2 means you have can have S, p and D subshells.

s holds 2, p holds 6, d holds 10.

2+6+10 = 18.

look at the transition metals. for instance Zinc. completely fills the 3rd shell and the subshells.

the maximum number of electrons in energy level n is expressed as 2n^2

so if n =3, max e-s will be 2(3)^2=18
