What does "D" stand for??

I dont have the book infront of me but it usually means Deuterium, which is a heavy form of hydrogen. This is used to see the arrangement of the hydrogen that is being added.
 
In addition to tracking the arrangement, deuterium is also used for chirality purposes. Thus if they want to designate R or S chiral center but there are two H attached, they'll make the differentiation by making one of them D and thereby creating a chiral center.

Just know that D is a little heavier than H so it takes priority when figuring out the stereochemistry.
