the answer says 20 chromatids

Isn't it 10?

my train of thought is... during interphase the chromosomes are in the unwound chromatin form. Each chromatin stands alone as a single chromosome which is a single chromatid. am I thinking of this wrong?

the question basically says that a somatic cell that was observed in its interphase has 10 chromosomes. how many chromatids is that?

Chromatin is chromosomes when they aren't dividing. In the S phase, DNA replicates. For every chromosome, there are two sister chromatids
 
a strand of chromatin isn't a strand of a chromosome. chromatin binds closely together to give you a chromosome, each of which has 2 chromatids...up until anaphase, where you have the equivalent of 1 chromatid=1 chromosome

oh ok this made sense. I forgot that during interphase when chromatin bundles up it form the sister chromatids (X looking). Instead i thought it formed single chromatids. Thank YOU
 
What stage of interphase?

If it's G1, I would think that the answer would be 10. During G2, 20.

It doesn't specify and i think part of the reason why I was confused was because I was thinking in terms of G1 when the book probably means part of G2
