Can anyone explain how he comes up with this value for the answer? I understand that as we descend the pyramid we should see an increase in available energy, but I don't understand how he's arrived at this figure. Any help would be appreciated.

The main point being made here is that there is only a 10% efficiency of energy transfer between pyramid levels. For example, say you had producers with a total of 100 units of energy, the primary consumers would therefore have only a total of 10 units of energy and the secondary consumers with 1 unit of energy.

So as you ascend the pyramid divide energy by 10 and when you descend the pyramid multiply by 10.

Thanks, I appreciate the clarification. That helps alot.
