Consider the below equilbrium:

X[H2O]6++ + 4Cl- -> XCl4-- + 6H2O

If you add HCl which way will the equilibrium shift?

The book says it will shift to the right, but I thought that when you have the Common Ion Effect any addition of HCl would cause a shift to the left.

HCl = H+ + Cl-

Adding HCl = adding Cl- --> Shift to the right.


Where does it say adding HCl always shift the reaction to the left?
 
Wizi if 4HCl-- would be on the products side, then adding HCl would shift it to the left?

This is basically Le Chatelier's principle. correct?

According to the reaction, XCl4 is not HCl. Why? Because H = +1 while X = +4 --> XCl4 can't be HCl.

Adding HCl means adding Cl- --> shift to the right.

Yes, this is Le Chatelier's principle.
