I took DAT on Sep, 2008, but I am taking it one more time sometime soon.
I am thinking to get a new 2009 destroyer, but is it worth of it?

I was wondering if it had been updated a lot.
Anyone knows?🙂

Check number of questions on site. I expect he has only added a handful since then.

I have the newest version of the destroyer and I compared it to the last destroyer and there are definitely new questions in each section. For instances in the Orgo section they are more spectroscopy questions dealing with C13 and IR. If you could get your hands on the newest addition in my opinion it could only help you not hurt you.
Good luck studying and retaking the DATs

Speaking from experience, I highly recommend getting the new edition. I use to have the Aug 2008 edition, but there's been a lot of updated questions, and more practice problems. Hope that helps, for me anyways its really helpful to have a newer version that's on the money.

Are you guys insane? You're basically telling the guy to spend $165 for a handful of new questions. DO NOT spend all that money for a newer version if you have an older version already (if you don't have one, try to snag an older version to save $50+...unless your parents are on a list on Forbes). I can't believe how often this question comes up and people actually try to encourage others to buy a newer version of destroyer.

The only reason why I would encorage you to buy the new edition is that I believe any new questions are helpful. The main goal at least for me is to get into dental school which I think is priceless!!! It doesn't matter which one of them comes out with the newer version I get it no matter what. I own new version of kaplan and destroyer and will get newer versions if they'll come out with them... and no my parents aren't on the Forbes list but after I get out of the dental school I will be on it! and that $1000 that I've spent on the books will be like a drop in the sea which will be my bank account

Definitely go for the latest edition of destroyer, I just got it and I think that you have to look at whatever money you spend on studying for the DAT as an investment that will pay off once you get into dental school.

I am very amazed at peoples responses on getting a new destroyer. I have been observing this for quite a while now on SDN. The funny thing is that my Dad is a CEO (lets just say my parents are very well off...not forbes though, lol) and the last thing I care about is money, especially when it comes to my education.

If you really believe that buying a 2009 destroyer is worth paying $165 (if you have a 2008 edition) then you simply shouldn't go into the dental field seeing that you are (this is really as nice as way I can put it, sorry) utterly stupid and will not be able to operate a private practice making decisions like that. Anyone who has been on this forum long enough knows that there's some false advertising going on regarding the destroyer (which is sort of counterintuitive since the product is actually decent). Just try to use common sense when buying a new product...you should be very liberal when it comes to your education (especially if it helps you get into dental school) but there's a limit to everything. As an analogy (a sort of bad one but you get the point)....would you pay $100 to have "PhD" followed by the name on one of your lecturers who wrote you a LOR? I hope the majority of you say no...if the content of the letter is the same having a teacher with a PhD vs one that doesn't have a PhD won't increase your chances in getting into dental school by "$100 worth" (now if I'd paying a dollar I might think about it since there MIGHT be some crazy admission officer out there who is biased against non PhDs LORers).

The more questions you have from destroyer the better you are, especially since the newer questions are more important than the old ones. I don't know that its worth an extra 165$ but you should definitely try and get those questions.

Listen, personally I would spend the $165 for the new version because i would rather have more questions at my disposal that are pretty much as detailed as the actual DAT then not have them. In the end of the day i would want to know that i used every resource at my disposal to get into dental school and not regret not getting something that could help me get in. It's my philosophy that I would spend as much money as possible on the best resources available because I view it as a investment in my future. I wouldn't want to regret not spending money on something and asking myself if that hurt my chances of getting in.

In my opinion, it's worth it and it helps me out. In the newer version, there's a lot of new questions on NMR and C13. I also bought the new Topscore and I definitely think the newer and updated the material are, the more reliable and I know that I'm studying the important useful stuff. It really depends how much $165 is to you, but to me I think that in the longrun it'll be a big invest when you get accepted to your dream school. It's really up to you, best of luck!!

For those who claimed that they spend an extra $165 to buy a newer version (2009) from after having an older version (2008)....could you specifically tell me the difference between the two (basically I want to know how many questions the 2008 has vs one from 2009).

Just received my 2009 Dat Destroyer today...

210 Ochem
212 Gen Chem
350 Biology
153 Quantitative Reasoning

and 6 Road Maps

Hope that helps.

I think its like 20-40 new questions per section

don't give me "I think"...I asked for specifics...I can tell you for a fact that you're wrong (no offence). From what I heard the QR has two extra questions (while some of the others sections might have about 20...not 40).

that's odd...those numbers don't even fully match up with what's on their website (same in Ochem and Bio but different in Gen and QR)

i just paged thru the book and those numbers are right

and im pretty sure 20 or so questions have been added to the ochem..not sure about the other sections. if u dont wanna buy the new edition, definitely get your hands on the new questions somehow.

Offhan I remember that the old destroyer has 184 orgo, 320 bio. So thats an additional 3 questions in each of those sections. I do not remember how many questions the other sections had.
