Which metal will react with HCl to release H2 gas?

Pt,Au,Cu,Mg,Ag,

answer is Mg because it is in group 2 and is more reactive?

i don't understand what being in group 2 has to do with anything.

Magnesium will be a 2+ cation reacting with two moles of HCl leaving MgCl2 and H2.

i understand that, but i don't understand why the other metals wouln't do the job either? =/

The other metals have different oxidation states ie. transition metals. Remember, it asks specifically for H2 gas.
