anway...its a distance between two points problem. both cars start at the same point (34th street)
point A = (7, -3)
point B = (3, 5)
distance = sqrt [(x2-x1)^2 + (y2-y1)]
= sqrt [(3-7)^2 + (5-(-3)^2)]
= sqrt [16+64]
= sqrt [80]
= 8.9

99% of problems that sound like this are dealing with distance. also, in order to be a rate problem you must be given a time frame in which "an event" takes place. check the pic ....yes, this is it. i didn't know how to start it because i never thought about the distance formula for this question. the speed wasn't given so i had no idea how to do it.
