i took the dat, my friends took the dat and the BIO section of the destroyer is nothing like the actual test. Don't let anybody fooool you...the OCHEM and GCHEM is aight but the math and bio section sucks...this website has become a marketing tool for some people to sell their cheeezzzy products to desperate students...how sad...Anybody that misleads the public could be procecuted and put in jail...trust your judgement and not some cheap salesman...

Yeah man, I understand you. But as long as it is legal, there isn't much we can do about it 🙁

There is nothing I, personally, can do about it - but I can encourage others not to be so zealous about it. I can express my opinion, which I'm sure is shared by many, that I am sick of all the destroyer marketing and hope that dear old Dr. Romano will notice my post and back off a little. I can atleast do that.

I am one of the original destroyer bashers, so I felt it would be a good time to chime in...

Guess what, I have purchased more materials than I care to list, EK subjects and Audio Osmosis, Kaplan, Destroyer, Schaum's, etc

and you know what, each of them have helped me thus far. I will not lie, for a while I was vehemently opposed to any post about the destroyer, because I was sick of the marketing. In the end, I decided to give it a shot, because some of the more respected members used it, and subsequently endorsed it.

Is it perfect? probably not. Is it magic? probably not. Is it another tool? yes. Is it full of information? yes. Does it test you differently than kaplan? yes. Other than that, you will have to wait, but I promised to give an unbiased opinion, and I will not be swayed. 🙂

It's up to you, take it or leave it...I think Destroyer is not as good as it has been advertised for the following reasons:
1-too expensive
2-the bio section sucks
3-there are mistakes in there
4-you could buy the kaplan book on line for $20 and go over the gchem and ochm, for those of you who think gchem and ochem in destroyer covers everything
5-you don't get any response from DDS. Ramano as he advertises for it
6-BTW, he is not a doctor...he is a dentist...not a PHD
7-it's not updated
8- there is no reading comp practices
and the list goes on

I don't mind people arguing and making comments as long as they are civilized and respect the forum...I am a student like you with hopes and dreams and I get mad when I see false advertisement on this site because we all depend on eachother to succeed

DOCTOR Romano updates his "destroyer" weekly, I would know because I receive the updates. Additionally, how would you know about receiving responses from him? Have you contacted him or Nancy once and did not receive a response? If so I would love to know when because every time I call or email they respond ASAP.
Furthermore, lets be honest here, you CLEARLY work for Kaplan and are trying to convince all of us to purchase your companies material...
I wish that I would have read your posts before I purchased the Kaplan book because if I would have known that Kaplan hires such dishonest/sneaky people I WOULD HAVE NEVER PURCHASED anything to help their company! 👎 very uncool! 👎thumbdown👎

we are all studying trying to do well on this exam and almost everyone I know is using more then one source.

Maybe the destroyer doesn't work for you but I should tell you that it sure seemed to work for my first who used it almost exclusively and is attending HARVARD DENTAL SCHOOL this fall!

On that note, don't you think your time would be better spent studying/ on your dental application/ doing a dental internship/ Shadowing....or anything else but sitting around and BASHING a book that seems to have helped and is currently helping many students???
Maybe you should get a hobby or something?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I have never been asked to pimp destroyer. Once, I defended it on a thread and Dr. Romano sent me a message thanking me, but he didn't ask me to do it nor ask that I do it in the future.

I just hate that people might be chased away from a useful product because of negativity that often times comes from people that have never used the book. Like I said, you aren't going to score well on destroyer alone. It doesn't help with the format of the DAT nor does it provide info in outline form (ala kaplan), but it is a good bank of questions on the sciences that I felt improved my score.

You are absolutely correct. Either Nancy or Dr. Romano is monitoring this board for at least 12 hrs a day and they compliment the students who defend the destroyer for them. By doing so the students feel they get more
attention from dr. romano and keep posting more good stuff. I wonder whether he pays all the taxes from the books he sold?

I dont see how how much money Dr. Romano is making has to do with you?? Yes, he is selling a book, so usually when you sell something you hope that people will buy it and you will make money-- Should he give us the material for free? Does your company (Kaplan) give out its material for free?? Just wondering.
No one is forcing anyone to purchase anything, I gladly purchased my copy, and from the looks of the posts above me, so did everyone else.

Have you even been to his class in real life?
FYI, he's busy teaching all day. With the schedule he has, I doubt he has time to be on here watching 24 hr like you are guessing.
Why don't you stop by at his business in NY in person before you badmouth others who you are guessing and have no idea what they do.
Get your fact straight before misguiding other students.
Someone students just want to help so they want to give hints to other who seek help.
I agree with some other students earlier that no one material is sufficient and by itself alone is no magic bullet. You have to do most of the work. THink of it as additional testings.
Who knows you might be Kaplan salesman yourself...are we going to bash you on it? No.

Anyway, let skeptics be skeptics and basher be basher. It's their loss anyway for never checking it out. Let's just keep it to ourselves and leave these skeptics to themselves. If they can succeed without it, then great for them. Let's get back to studying.

i've left feedback on other dat products (not going to say which)..and i got upgraded after my feedback...didn't know i was going to get it...but it sure was nice....😎

Oh my, did I just pimp the destroyer? 😱 Guess what, kaplan blue book is good! And it provided me with a good brush up. And you know what else, I enjoy Audio Osmosis as I am driving through the day, because it gives me another medium to be learning from. And ExamKrackers has some good stuff. And Schaum's has too much information, but it is good. And your college textbooks.... they are probably good as well. And ScienceAid's laminated sheets are good, and finally, the Destroyer! Guess what, it is really good.

They all help. So quit your incessant whining, and ridiculous attempts to discredit products. It is sad to start a thread with a title like this, regardless of how you feel.

Maintaining a professional attitude is important, a little thing called tact, goes a long way! I hope the best for all of you, but the excessive praise and bad-mouthing is a little over the top.....

Ok, just to point out for the record, if there's anything that's outdated, its Kaplan. In fact, many new destroyer updates were recently put out. Hmm, I wonder if Kaplan will send me updates if I ask them. The Kaplan stuff is helpful, but to a point. Anyway guys, this whole thing is silly, we're all fellow soldiers in this struggle and war is not the answer, according Marvin Gaye 🙂 Let's work together & unite to make our dreams a reality. If there's anything we should be fighting is that horrible question everybody has been complaining about and the ADA's indifference to it! I don't know about you guys, but I'm going to go look for the ice cream man, yeah, I'm actually hoping he drives by at 2 am in the morning. See what hardcore studies do to you, heh!!!

I think that this site has been corrupted by immature individuals such as you, and that instead of posting negative remarks and personal insults against someone you dont even know, you should go study or something. Same goes for everyone else that thinks that its fun to bash people on a DAT discussion forum, when we're supposed to be helping each other. Cliffs ap is way better than Kaplan if you're looking for a review...not just for plants but for the following as well:

animal physiology, cell/molecular biology, evolution/ecology (cliffs is even better than schaums for this section)...and systematics.

I highly doubt that many of you are going to become dentists, yet alone professionals of any skill. The character, dignity, and ethic displayed by some of you is abhorrent. I only can hope that admissions staff catch glimpses of this, so that they can keep you out of this field. Your behavior and actions have already diluted SDN, and hopefully the staff can keep you from impacting this profession in the same way.

It's easy for rumors to spread and for people to say things they'd never ordinarily say to someone's face - when it's an anonymous forum! SDN can be a very helpful place, but you gotta watch out for the rumors and gossip.

If you feel you don't need the Destroyer, don't get it.

I mean, the quality of the book is average at best--cheap binding, simply-formatted questions. While I do think the book is a good tool to use for DAT test-takers, $150 is too expensive for students. I would endorse it as a good deal at $75 - $90, but the current price tag is too high. If Romano really cares about students doing well he should lower his price and make it more affordable to wider audience. Who knows, it could also bolster his sales and he might actually make more money.

At first glance it might seem overpriced, but upon closer examination, I think 150 dollars is about right.

The book has close to 660 problems for the SNS. Topscore and Achiever are priced at 50 dollars a piece. In all fairness, Topscore and Achiever offer PAT and RC sections. However, the RC is useless for both products. Achiever PAT is good however.

However, the solutions are what seperate the Destroyer from Achiever and Topscore. Given the amount of information in the book, I don't think 150 is too much because the book serves so many purposes (at least for me).

When I was an undergrad, I was used to shelling out big bucks for useless textbooks (used and new)...when it came time to select my DAT prep material...I don't know I wasn't too picky as far as price was concerned. If it seemed usefull, I bought it. And yes, I have a job and support myself, I don't wipe my butt w/ 100 dollar bills. So, maybe some people might look at Destroyer as inaccessible, but that wasn't the case for me.

I think it matters less what you study but how you study and how good you are at understanding/retaining concepts.

Of the many posts you have seen, were majority of them saying it was solely because of destroyer? NO! Most of them say it is a combo of this and that - Kaplan, Achiever, Schaum, Topscore and Destroyer. The moment anyone mention the word Destroyer along with other stuffs they used, you assume they are Destroyer marketing?

Destroyer, don't cover PAT or RC. They only cover science.

Destroyer = expensive? I buy $150 of alcohol at least for every party I have and that's nothing...oh wait, I'm on SDN I forgot. Anyways, you get unlimited updates (you pay for shipping but that's it). The destroyer is an updated book as is the DAT which is why I personally find this book to be invaluable. I might retake the DAT next year and guess what? I don't have to pay $150 to get the updates AND there will be more material that's covered.

I think it is ridiculous the admins have let this thread go this far and once again disapprove of their actions 👎. Look at how many people have checked this thread out. If the admins love the bashing so much why don't you make it a sticky while we're at it? The thread is not helping other pre-dental students out but the few bashers on this forum are propagating this issue to veer students away from doing well on the test which I believe isn't what the forum is meant to do. You're right, I don't think this should be a marketing forum and there should be "i love Destroyer threads" but I also don't think there should be "I hate destroyer threads. I think students should decide on their own from people who report back after they take the DAT because those are the ones that will know what's on the test. I think the point has been made by the OP so if there are any additional ridiculous comments and the admins won't do anything about this thread, I think it's time for a little destroyer defense so flame on you trolls!!

I'm just jumping in at the end of the post here, haven't actually read through it.

My two cents on the destroyer is I used it last year, took my DAT in August of 2006 and got a 20 overall.

Doctor Romano has some solid information in the book. I have also used Kaplan (and looked over some other resources), which wasn't anything special in my opinion. Also, from what I understand Dr. Romano upgraded the destroyer recently, so it should be even better than what I had back in '06.

For the amount of money that this book costs you really can't afford not to get it.

If you have any specific questions about the destroyer, feel free to message me and I'll do my best to answer the questions. I will check in later in the week.
