I'm wondering if anyone could please tell me how much detailed knowledge we're supposed to have in this area. I've never learned about the kidneys in a class before, and the EK chapter on this is pretty detailed. It has covered the functions of the: renal corpuscle, proximal tubule, distal tubule, loop of Henle, collecting duct, and the juxtaglomerular apparatus. (I've heard of none of this before, lol) Is it worth it to spend the time and learn what each of these individual parts does?

Thank you

Must know how the tubule's function to change the osmotic pressure of the primary urine. Ex- Descending loop of henle is impermeable to salt and results in water loss to the surrounding resulting in a hypertonic fluid within the tubule.

You shouldnt study it in super detail, but you should definitely know what each does and what hormones work on it and where. Get a good understanding of what's going on in bowman's capsule as well.

Thanks for the reply. Any chance you wouldn't mind explaining a bit, or perhaps pointing me to a good resource? The EK material seems to be way over my head (even the audio)

I think its pretty important stuff. It is primarily the main component of the excretion system and I feel like a lot of questions can be asked about it since it can relate to other topics so easily (circulatory system, homeostasis, endocrine system, metabolism/gluconeogenesis, o chem, etc...). I recommend Khan academy's videos on kidney. It kind of helped me visualize things on a rudimentary level.

I never learned about it before either and it was the one section I spent the most time learning in bio. I recommend you look up online videos and reference textbooks. Knowing that glucose is not normally excreted, ascending loop = salt reabsorption, descending loop= water reasborption, ADH = water resabsorption in collecting duct, and many other key functions are part of the kidney.

Its kind of seems like I'm exaggerating it's importance, but its really one of the few topics that can be connected to almost every other bio subject.
