As a Canadian moving to Detroit, I am in the exact same boat as you are my friend. Any advice for housing areas that are safe and within public commuting distances would be helpful.
I've been asking several current students through PMs and the consensus is the following:
Royal Oak -
Pros: cool area, great places to hang out, very safe area
Cons: 20 - 25 minutes from school, more costly than other areas.
Dearborn/Dearborn Heights -
Pros: pretty close to school (10 min), pretty good food, reasonable cost
Cons: has a couple of questionable areas (East), although there are a few cool places in the area, people tend to go to RO
Ferndale -
Pros: another pretty cool area (located by RO), cheaper than RO, safe area
cons: still 20-25 min from school
Downtown -
Pros: close to school, cool stuff right downtown, nice lofts
Cons: surrounding area not so hot, price of lofts
Note: there are several other really nice suburbs of Detroit, but many are not within a reasonable proximity to school OR might be a bit pricey. Also, like many metropolitan areas, the main expressways become locked up during rush hours. If anyone is aware of pros/cons not listed...please add or correct me.

I take it that having a car is a "must-have" to get to the new dental school? Is there no option for public transit? I really didn't plan on having to purchase a car...

I'd suggest you change your plan then. I'm not sure you will be happy living in the area directly around the school. Public transit may be an option, but not an attractive one. You could always room with someone who is willing to cart you back and forth to school. Good luck.
Thanks for the advice JamieMac!
I have been leaning towards Royal Oak, and you have helped my decision for sure!
Already seems like a good crowd for our class next year........
I think I am gonna go with RO too. Safety is my, and probably should be, everyone's top priority.
I heard theres construction on the expressways. Does anyone know which places are gonna be affected the most by it?
From what I have seen Royal Oak is definatly the safest.
The fact that everyone in Dearborn has told me to live on the west side of the southfield freeway, a couple lanes of highway is not safe enough. I have seen the east side of the southfield freeway in Dearborn, and it looks like your in downtown detroit still.
So for everyone in DS1 this august at Detroit Mercy, go to Royal Oak so I can get notes from you when I sleep in, jk....
