So I just got interview from Detroit Mercy and I am super excited because everyone that has interviewed there has absolutely loved the school. I dont know that much about the school so I was wondering if people could tell me more about the school (pro, cons). Thanks in advance!!!!

Just predicting any future questions.... im out of state and I got the interview via snail mail.

First, I took a tour of the facility, which has just moved & so is very up to date w/the newest technology, and then I had my interview. (UDM Dental school is not on the UDM main campus, it stands alone). UDM is a stress free interview w/one of the admin/faculty. I interviewed w/Dr. Charles Taylor (full time faculty member in the department of patient management). Your letter will tell you who you are interviewing with. Questions will be mostly ethical (students cheating, dental ethics, etc.). Just answer honestly and be yourself. I have been accepted at UDM and U of Mich. I will probably attend UDM. The clinic experience is better than UofM and since I plan to be a GP it will be to my advantage to have the variety of patients that an urban setting offers. The staff at UDM is very caring and committed to the success of the students.
I live in Michigan, so I didn't stay at a hotel. There is a Holiday Inn Express on the border of Allen Park/Dearborn, MI on Enterprise Drive which is right off I-94. Also, there is a Best Western on that same road. It would take you about 15-20 minutes to get there from either one of these hotels. Not really sure of the cost or what they are like. Good luck, hope this helps.

Pros: New facility, great staff, students are down to earth, everyone helps each other out, wide variety of cases, lots of patients, get to work in both the dental clinic at the school and a hospital dental clinic (exposure to different types of situations/cases), commute to school with free parking

Cons: Cost, it is in Detroit...

If you want more information or have a question feel free to PM me 🙂

Thanks so much everyone!!!!

Did you look up information on your interviewer???? I tried to look up on the UDM website for their faculty but was unsuccessful. Can anyone help with this???

Also how recently was the school revamped? And I hear that it is surrounded in a bad area is this true???

The class of 2012 is the first D1 class at the new school, so we'll be second 🙂. It isn't just revamped, they actually moved from their old facility. The facility isn't in a great neighborhood, but it is right off the freeway & its awesome. The urban setting is the reason you will see it all in the clinic. You would probably choose a place such as Royal Oak, Allen Park, W. Dearborn, Troy, or one of the many suburbs to live w/a 15-30 min commute. Somebody on another post mentioned living in Windsor and commuting, but not sure how well that would work. I didn't try to find any info on my interviewer. I'm not really sure that reading a bio would help w/the interview. It really was not stressful. Relax and be yourself.

I agree with the others, do NOT worry about your interview. My interviewer, Dr. Grand, was SOOOOO nice. We literally had a conversation the whole time, I actually asked HIM if he wanted to ask me any questions, and he only had one about what I thought about cheating. We also had the interview at a coffee shop (I was at the hospital location for my interview because he was working there with the students) and he bought me coffee! Most relaxing interview ever, made a great impression 🙂 Both the school and the hospital are great 👍

I didn't know UDM was a new school? Is it accredited?

i just got the interview invitation via email. think it is a great school but i am not sure whether i should attend the interview because as an out of state applicant, my chances seem low, especially since it's a post december interview. does anyone know how much they filled up their space?

Do you have an acceptance already?

I don't think it matters if you are from out of state as it is a private school. It seems that UDM interviews are very spread out, so I don't think that you should count yourself out.

yes.

to MKD1960

from predents they select 52 instate and 26 out of state so i thought they have preference but not sure.

is UDM located in a place like cleveland? i was bit shocked when i went to cleveland...

As an out of stater you have equal chances of getting in as someone who is in state. I was just there a week ago to drop off my deposit and was talking to someone in admissions and this is what I was told...

1. They are interviewing through JUNE aka it is still very early for them
2. They only had about 50 interviews so far... speaks for itself
3. They only give interviews to those they are SERIOUSLY interested in
4. They only have deposits from 10-15 people right now so the class is far from full

My take on this.... everyone still has a great chance of getting in here!

Ismile - I am not doubting you but did you hear those statistics from the admissions office or are you just guessing off predent stats? I got an interview invitation about a week ago, along with a friend I know - just wondering how many were offered an interview?

Also I smile - or any one else - do you know approximately the ratio of interview to offers of admission? If they are interviewing through June that seems quite scary as it sounds like a ton of interviews. Just wondering if its a good ratio like for every 2 they interview 1 gets in - since you said they only offer interviews to those they are seriously interested in

Thanks!!

I just got an interview invite for UDM too, I'm also quite excited!

I got an interview, I will not be attending the interview however.

if you do your best you will get in. Stats don't mean nothing.

Are you talking about the area the school is in? If so, detroit is as "ghetto" as it gets. It's even worse than cleveland. But from what I hear most people who goes to UDM doesn't live near school but live somewhere else and drive to the school.

I'm not familiar w/Cleveland, but the area around UDM is not great, however it is no more than 30 minutes away (right off the freeway) from nice places to live. You have to understand that one of the reasons UDM's clinical experience is so varied and exceptional, aside from the the new facility, is because of the urban setting and the number of different cases you will see. There is no shortage of patients. If you don't think you can get past that, then it is not for you.

I heard the statistics directly from the admissions office, no guessing (unless it was on their part). Yay for good news? As far as I know (as per words of admission office) they have been careful with handing out interviews and putting a lot of people "on hold" to wait for new DAT scores or Fall semester grades. So prior to January, not many interviews were granted, maybe more so now but I am not sure about how many. I am not sure about the interview/offer ratio but the feel I got from it was if you get along with your interviewer then you are golden. As far as interviewing through June, it is not as many people as you think... they do not have group interviews. When I went it was me and one other person that day right after me so I guess 10 a week tops?

I do not know what Cleveland is like, but the Detroit area is quite ghetto... however, as a Michigan resident the immediate area around the school did not seem too bad (compared to the rest of Detroit), lots of new houses/apartments going up. Once you are at the school it seems very safe and nice 🙂 Also, Detroit is slowly getting better. Other areas of Michigan are actually worse than Detroit these days (crime/safety wise). It is true, most of the students commute from nice areas to school, but I met a few who live in Detroit and love it! I guess it depends what you like.

Hi All,

I also received an invitation to interview. First, if you haven't called, do so immediately. They are booking out nearly three weeks in advance already. Secondly, I'm trying to get an idea of what questions will be asked during the interview. Clearly, from the above responses, cheating is a biggie. Any others.

Thanks!

Make sure you look at the interview feedback section:

Oh thanks so much! That is a little more helpful!

Hopefully this isn't too late to help you but the interview is very relaxed and conversational. It's one on one as you might already know and the questions are very straight forward. They really want to just get to know you. I wouldn't stress too much. Just relax and be yourself. Off course they want to know why you want to do dentistry but other than that, the only "typical" question I got was what my greatest strength is.

Oh and I loved the school. The facilities are amazing and the faculty and staff have to be the friendliest I've ever met.

I got a chance to meet a couple fourth years who were also very friendly and helpful.

On a side note, I'd read in a thread sometime back (sorry I can't recall which one it was or who asked) where someone asked if any students lived in Windsor. In case your question hasn't already been answered I actually asked the same question when I was there. Apparently students and some faculty live there. It supposedly takes about 20 - 30 minutes to get to school but that off course depends on the level of border security each day but it is manageable.

Anyway, I hope this helps and good luck on your interview.

UDM interview is great! I had Dr. Berkowski - very nice, relaxing - not stressful! I had it yesterday so I can maybe help some of you.... Living situation, most live in Royal Oak, but they made the decision to live in RO before they moved to the new dental school. I talked to another person that lives downtown Detroit - no problems even at night, only mentioned no grocery store nearby. Eventually will probably see a shift to the Dearborn area since the campus is in southwest Detroit now, and that is where I plan to live if accepted. You are going to have an ~ 8 minute drive from Dearborn and 20+ from RO.

CAMPUS IS AMAZING - FACILITIES A++

I sure hope I get the acceptance letter - my school of choice - they are going to prepare you for the clinic and that is what I am looking forward to

Any one that has been interviewed in the past - did you get accepted, and how long after the interview were you notified. I hope I have a chance to goto my #1 school!

I also asked about the amount of deposits and he did not have the sheet there but said he looked at a new one that day and about 60 spots had deposits down so pretty full - good luck to everyone that has an interview!

As for the UDM v Michigan question - can't go wrong either way, but UDM is going to give you much more for experience and prepare you better when you start working - I say UDM you guys decide for yourself!

Hi All,

Thanks so much for the great feedback. I feel like I'm more stressed out about it because of my pre-health advisor and her psycho antics, but I did great in past interviews so I'm really looking forward to it especially since it's where my dad went. Cross your fingers class of 2013!

Also, sorry for the rant, but I feel like this site doesn't help the stress when you have all these people freaking out about the number of spots... I'm just saying.

I'm guessing this is too late because I believe today is the last day of the interview cycle at Mercy, but the interview was very laid back. We interview right in the clinic and I had lunch with 3 fourth year student who were very friendly. And Dr. Berkowski was very friendly and informative. I learned a lot more about the school after talking to him. Let me know when anyone hears anything cause I think that they are having their meeting tomorrow. Good luck to those who are waiting 🙂!

Haha I despise SDN for posts involving "number of seats left". But good luck to all who interview at UDM! Post some good info. about questions and atmosphere afterwards, I hear it's a great school!

may i ask how you know its hte last week of UDM interviews?

may i ask how you know its hte last week of UDM interviews? that msg was for the person 2 posts up

Its not the last week of interviews, I'm just saying I think the interview cycle is closing, but I'm assuming they are going to have more interview cycles to come after this cycle.

where did you get the information? is it from admissions office? or just assuming?

I hope it's not closing this week, my interview is next Wednesday! :scared:

how do you know it is ending soon? and how long are they? I just had my interview yesterday. It was with Dr. Gleason. Same as everyone else has said, it was very laid back and more of a conversation than anything else. He only asked why dentistry and why UDM. I took the tour after my interview. Anyone know when I should be expecting to hear? good luck to upcoming interviewees, and don't worry, it's fine!

My interview is tomorrow - so the "cycle" has not closed yet...

lol they offered for mine to be tomorrow but i didn't want it on friday the 13th....

There are no real interview "cycles". They continue to interview until July. The seats may be filled for the entering class by April, at least. However, they will continue to interview for the alternate positions when others drop.

We had a lot of people get in from alternate position interviews. Some people in my class were called 3 days into the first week of school stating they were accepted. Okay, one person.

I interviewed in May and when I was accepted, the next day, the admissions office gave me the interview cycle rundown. They don't compile the alternate list until July. However, they will interview for alternate positions and take whomever they wish in any order before the actual list is compiled. After July, this list is the rule, basically.

Keep in mind that UDM's cycle is later than most, so don't get too discouraged...yet.

Good luck.

Pre-Dents shows a couple more acceptances today... One being same-day as the interview?! Is this for real?!

haha lulu, i just saw that too. insane! i interviewed feb 11th and haven't heard anything yet... getting very very scared. anyone out there have to wait more than a day after their interview to get accepted? pleeeasE? 🙁

I think just stay positive. I think hearing from AZ about the fact that they are behind is hopeful. Though, I have to say, this is honestly the most unnerving, and unkind process I have ever experienced.

*sigh* I still haven't gotten a interview from UDM... all I keep getting are those monthly updates from them.

lol they offered for mine to be tomorrow but i didn't want it on friday the 13th....

Karin told me that that day has been open for awhile, too many superstitious people! haha

but seriously: 2/13 = 2013 how could you have missed that correlation??? lol it was pretty good luck for me! 🙂

good luck, girl! i called the other day to make sure they have all my transcripts and carol blackburn said that they havent gone thru mail yet but ask again at the end of the week and there is a committee review sometime this week for interviewees who still havent heard (me)
