Hi Psych students! I'm a pre-vet student myself but I have a question for my boyfriend who applied to some psych programs. He applied to developmental psych programs (I know the majority of you are clinical - but I'm hoping that some of you may have experience with developmental programs). He has an interview at the University of Pittsburgh and is wondering what to expect from the interview there. All of the interview feedback that I've found for him on SDN is for the clinical programs. I'm wondering if the interviews would be different for the developmental programs.

Thanks for your time and help! If you ever have any pre-vet questions feel free to come over to our side of the forum! 🙂

I am in developmental and during my interviews I met with individual faculty and their labs and was asked about my research interests and what I hoped to gain with a degree in developmental psychology. I also was asked by one POI what my dream project would be if I had unlimited resources. I'm not sure how this may differ from clinical programs though.

Wow, you're a very nice girlfriend to be doing this homework for him! I'm not developmental, so I can't add much. Sorry!

I think the formality of these interviews might differ by program. I'm a clinical student, but we also have a Ph.D developmental program in our department, and sometimes they interview for both the developmental students and the clinical students on the same day. In my program, the developmental interview is a lot more low key. It seems as if it is more of an opportunity for the interviewees to see if the program is a good fit for their needs rather than vice versa. In fact, at the end of the interview for the developmental program, all the interviewees, professors, and current grad students go out drinking together, something that would never happen for the clinicals 🙄 Again, this probably differs by program. Your boyfriend might want to consider contacting a current grad student in the POI's lab or another helpful grad student to find out the format of interview day (if the coordinator didn't already send this).
