Does anyone use a dictation software program for notes? I can see an obvious advantage for long assessment reports but what about a DAP/SOAP note that may take 7 minutes to type or an intake that takes 25-35 minutes? How do these programs do with clinical jargon?

I use dragon speak daily. I love it and I hate it. I still have to proofread very closely. I once put in a patient's chart "patient struggling with symptoms of posterior buttocks stress disorder" instead of post traumatic stress disorder....oops. I think microphone and CPU speed matters. If you can enunciate well and speak clearly, it does well. You can "train" it to recognize just about any word. Mine does well with some larger clinical words and I have a terrible mic and slow CPU (thanks VA). Slower CPU's and crappy mic's make it a pain though. Still sometimes a necessity on busier days and I type fast.

Dragon with the approved USB recorder. iPhone app ate up too much space. Dictate and then get assistant to clean up mistakes and throw on my desk for approval. Dont pay for the medical version. It learns your spelling of terms relatively quickly. Doesn't remove the "uh"s and "goddamn it"s.

Fun aside: back when I was in an apartment, I became friends with a neighbor. He had seen me pace back and forth in my place until 1am, looking like I was talking to myself. Expressed some concern because he thought I was some form of schizophrenia. Had to explain I was dictating. Turned out well. We both like baseball.

I just got an email saying that our department has to do dragon training. They are going to try and get rid of our human transcribers again and the old doc that fought it the most retired. Arggh. I can spit out an intake in five to ten minutes or a progress note in about a minute when dictating into my voice recorder and the errors are typically minor.

Dragon is great, especially if you also use it for voice commands (like inserting a progress note template or frequently used phrases).

Agreed. It's really as good as you allow it to be. It can be customized to make your life easier.
