Hi guys,
I am curious if anyone out there passed up the opportunity to go to a ranked school in favor of going to an unranked school. If so, do you regret your decision? I'm interested in clinical work- so just curious how much rankings really matter in the long run.

I would REALLY like to hear from others regarding this question as well. Although I am only now applying, it would really be nice to know if going to top-ranked private schools are really worth it. I have 36S MCAT and 4.0, but I am still leaning toward my state school b/c of cost and the fact that everyone seems to agree that the doctors that want to go into practice receive excellent training at state schools.

Look in the pre-allo forum. This thread was posted there, too. When you interview, you will get a feel from each school. Just trust your gut. You can get any residency from any school if you work hard, so go where you think you'll be happy.

Hi there--

I turned down a NUMBER of ranked schools-- and am attending SUNY downstate in the fall. My decision was based largely on cost and convenience (my fiancee is also a med student), but (as of right now) am feeling pretty good about the decision. I LOVED downstate when I visited there and am very excited about starting. I volunteered for three years in Columbia's Peds ER, and many of the residents there came from state schools-- one actually turned down Harvard for his state school. Further, those who went to private schools (e.g. harvard) have told me that they regret their decision.

I think that if you do well in med school, regardless of where you go-- you will get into a great residency.

I turned down a ranked school (OHSU) for NYMC (and I'm from oregon), which some may say was a bad decision, but I chose the school that seemed to fit me the best. I didn't feel like OHSU was the right place for me to be in many ways, easy as that. I don't regret it whatsoever. Regardless of the stigma NYMC carries here at SDN for being a back up school or a low-tier school, I'm still getting one hell of a good education!!

Agreed 100%.

It's been discussed here fairly regularly I think. If you're interested in an academic career and have the opportunity to attend an upper level school (I mean top 10-15) you should grab it IMO.

Otherwise, go wherever you want and excel. Top 10% at most schools is better than middle of the road at big name schools...or so I'm told. Besides, it's as much about your Step scores as anything.

I really liked the atmosphere at both of my state schools and declined other interviews/withdrew apps by November.

Agreed go where you felt most comfortable...and beyond that go where it's cheaper. 😉
