I interviewed recently and the tour was horrible! The student pretty much complained the entire time. Did anyone else have a discouraging tour guide/funny story about a tour?

What year was your student? It is coming up on the end of the semester and they may be getting burned out. My guides were all cheerful and happy to share their school.

Yeaaah I did too. It was kind of awkward and uncomfortable but he was in fourth year and he fully admitted to being burnt out, sick of school, and ready to work. I can understand that though, you know how it is. Dental school is going to be hard but we all know that going in! They maybe just shouldn't have volunteered to be tour guides 😛

Not my tour guides, but a couple of the students I got to talked to were like "I'm so glad I've been interviewing for a lot of specialty programs, because I don't feel 100% comfortable doing some of the clinical work in general, at this point."

So, it definitely appealed to the specialty gunners there, but not those who wanted to do general dentistry.

at one of my interviews I had one really crap tour guide/D4 student. she totally should have been excluded from such privileges. not only was she a bad representative of the school, she had no clue how to speak with students and be courteous. She just kept talking and talking and talking, she almost never asked us "do you have any questions?" and she also walked us through an empty part of the clinic (i didnt quite understand that.)

plus the school was a major no-no for me because of one statement by her and another D4. They said that "some days were so busy we dont have time to sit down... but other days were just sitting around and goofing off." :wtf:

so I should spend 400K to goof off and see less patients?

..when you go to a new school that hasn't had a graduating class yet...because the tour guides are first years.

My tour: "So uh yeah right here we have this building...I'm not sure what the name of it is since I haven't been in there yet"

...ok

When tour guide was asked about clubs available to students:
"Clubs?...We have lots of clubs, but don't think you are going to have time for any of them...Actually, I couldn't even name one club...You are going to be way to busy to join a club."

Tour guide asked: "Are any of you married, or do you have kids?"

After everyone replied no, "Good you won't have time for them here."

I have family and friends in dental programs as we speak, and with the boatloads of work that your gonna have in D school... your gonna be glad/lucky to have time to just goof off... so dont look at it as a negative

why are u complaining? the tour guide is right lol

Once again the tour guide is right... lol

I understand the challenge dental school brings, but I'm on a tour to learn about the school. Not hear a dental student complain on how they don't have time to "party." I wanted to know about the school and the classes. I think we all know what we are getting into.

right but you have to understand what i meant that they dont have enough patients in their clinic. which really sucks.

Well, that's a little subjective. Dental school won't be so strenuous for everyone. A lot of people are going to be able to succeed, have time to go out, and bake cookies.

Take what they say with a grain of salt. They are most certainly over-dramatizing a bit. But to be honest, dental school is a very rigorous program. You will be busy and you may not have free time most weekends. Some days in clinic, you will be swamped, and other days you may have a ton of cancellations. You will not have as much time to spend with your family as you would like. This is the sacrifice you make in order to be able to provide a better future for them. The one's that understand this, will endure. The one's that don't quite figure it out, usually split up or get divorced (this has happened before). One person does not represent the entire school so don't form too bad of an impression just because of one lame tour guide.

FALSE!

I am active in many clubs: El President for Student Professional Conduct Committee, on the board for Student Professionalism and Ethics Association, active with Kids Club and the Student Outreach Clinic with the local chapter of AAPHD, and am an officer on our classes student government

And I have a wife and kiddo. You will have plenty of dental school work to do, but if you manage your time wisely, you will be able to goof off, be active in the dental community, and have time for your family.
