What i mean by this is that did anyone enter dent. school without a bachelors degree and if you did can you please elaborate as to how you did this? Reason I ask is because I am following these steps and I want to finish all my prereqs., take my DAT then apply right away. Please help me. Thank you all..😕

If you want to take this path, just do what you wanted to do... finish all your prerequisites to get into dental school, take the DAT, and then apply right away. The prerequisite courses are the minimum that you had to have taken before you can enter dental school. Keep in mind that most applicants with a degree under their belt would have an advantage over someone who does not.

hey thanx for the post. Thats true...but i was hoping that my strong background in the dental field would help, since I am a dental assistant now, and i'm going to be shadowing a dentist for awhile.

I got in without a degree, but I had already completed all my pre-reqs before I applied. My DAT and GPA scores were primarily the reason I got in, more than whether I had B.S. degree or not.

hey thanx cold front. If you don't mind can you give me the stats on your GPA and DAT, that would really help. Oh and what school did you apply to..thanx so much

I'm currently a sophomore in college and am planning on giving it a shot this May. I haven't taken the DAT yet (currently taking Organic Chemistry I), but my GPA is currently 3.74. Do you think I'll stand a shot getting accepted to *any* dental school (preferably not NYU, citing cost factors) in the nation if I have at least a 3.7?

With a GPA between the range of 3.68-3.74, what would you consider to be the minimum DAT score I'd need to get accepted?

That's what I am hoping to do as well, but do you think it would be better until your done with all your pre-reqs or most of them?

I would say with your GPA your minimum DAT should be like 19-20. I haven't taken them yet, but i'm just taking a reasonable guess.

How are you studying for your DAT?

Actually, I haven't even started studying, yet. After I take the organic chemistries this year and biology II next semester, the only pre-reqs left to take will be the physics courses. I'm tentatively planning on taking the DAT sometime in March (that way, I can re-take it and re-submit my second scores by June if I don't do well the first time around). I'm thinking about taking the Kaplan course this winter/early spring, but I'm not sure if I'll need to.

What are your GPA and DAT scores?

From the stats listed in the book ADEA guide to Dental school. Only 1-2 if any at all are accepted without a degree. I would say to do this you need sweet connections or a nice DAT paired with a 3.9+ gpa(19-20 probably won't cut it) like 23+. The latter part is just my opinion (no experience) but from what I hear it is pretty tough to get in without it.
good luck

Hey, thanx for the heads up. Yea i will definately aim for a 4.0 and a 25+ on my DAT, if that doesn't work, then we'll see. Thank you though.

Wow -- this is going to be a hell of a lot harder than I had originally thought.

I was hoping I could at least get into some of the schools that have lower average accepted GPAs. For example, according to Predents.com, the average accepted GPA for BU is 3.23. I figured I'd have a decent shot at an acceptance there if I applied with, say, a 3.70 (minimum).

I will probably apply to at least 10 schools: those with average accepted GPAs less than 3.50 and my state school (MCG).

This is simply not true.

This was couple of years ago...

My GPA was ~3.5 and DAT 21/20 (AA/Sci). I applied super late, around November, still got good number of interviews; Ohio State, Louisville, BU, Case and Nova. Some of those schools interviewed me knowing their class was already full, so I ended up in their wait-list.

The secret is to apply early, somehow people with the best stats and EC's applied late, so schools primarily focused on interviewing those guys when it came to the post-December portion of the cycle.

Certain school are more receptive than others to accepting students without a degree. UOP for one accepts a lot of students who don't have a bachelor's. Many of the students are from their undergrad campus who have only done 2 or 3 years, but I've also met a lot of people from other schools who got in without a degree. I would say 10-20% of my class have not completed their bachelors. If your classes transfer and meet enough requirements, UOP will also award you a BS in biological science upon completion of the DDS program.

You all are the best....I really appreciate your time and information you guys put in to help us out. Thanx a lot.

This actually gives me more hope, I will try to update my progress for all of you guys...also can you update your progress as well..thanks again

Yea some schools have people who do a joint program. Here there is a 6 yr joint BS/DDS degree...you do 2 yrs in undergrad and if you maintain a ceratin GPA and get a certain DAT (and from what I hear...they dont really set the standards too high which is kind of irritating)...they'll save you a spot in the class. we have like 6 people from that.

thanx shamrock. What school are you talking about and what are the stats or website...

Cold Front, did you have any connections to the school you applied to?

three year old thread, throw him a pm and let us know what he says 🙂

Your "strong background in the dental field" is unlikely to get you a standing ovation from adcoms let alone deans of admission.
