Did anyone get the supplemental from UCLA yet? If you did, how long after your app was mailed?

Thanks!

I got mine on the 30th and it was mailed out on the 27th. I was surprised it was so soon.

How did you fill out the pdf? The pdf version won't let me save a copy for some reason. Did you have this issue too?

mgether36- It doesnt let you save on the pdf...
UCLA stated it in the email and on the file.....

Yeah, I realize that now. My bad.

But also: did you have an issue near the bottom where it asks how many siblings you have? It's at the bottom of page 3. There seems to be 3 bubbles and a few random spots that you can type in. But there are no directions?

Mgether36- That is an issue I was wondering about also. I am planning to call UCLA to figure what this is.

For those that have already received the supplemental, are you OOS or IS?

I am also going to call them on monday. I will post back here when I get an answer from them

So once i finished filling it out, there was an option to "export the file as PDF". On my Mac it was File->Export as PDF. then you just name the file to the correct format they ask for.

what is the UCLA supplemental like ? I would be applying as OOS and am thinking of adding them to my AADSAS, but do not want to waste time and money as an OOS applicant. I am a PA resident and am interested in possibly adding one west coast school for fun.

UCSF (or UoP) probably would be a better option than UCLA as it is more friendly OOS.

What version of adobe reader are you using? I don't see the "export as PDF" option...

oh sorry. its actually on my mac. its a preview program that allows you to look at and fill out pdfs and then export it. i haven't tried it on a pc so i wouldn't know exactly how but there should be an equivalent option i think.

No! there is actually a way to format the PDF to allow you to type directly onto the PDF - and save it without scanning it - scanning printed pages will make the PDF look very ugly. Speak to one of your friends who know how to use technology well - and find out a way to TYPE DIRECTLY onto the PDF and save it.

Scanning the PDF is a big NO NO - even though UCLA does tell you that you cannot type directly onto the PDF - you STILL CAN actually!

UCLA literally says in their email to print the filled out sheet and scan it in "black and white" and then send the file back to them. The quality does not matter as long as the application is readable

and also, if you really want to write and save the pdf you need to purchase or just download some free version of a different pdf reader that will allow you to change the settings of the document. You wont be able to change the format using adobe.

No! Don't scan the pages - you will see that scanning the pages will make the PDF file SUPER LARGE and it makes the entire PDF look very ugly and unprofessional.

If you simply type onto the PDF file - it is so easy and quick and makes the entire PDF file look so clean and much nicer.

Find a friend who know how to work around a PDF file - and find out QUICKLY how to type directly onto the PDF file.

If you read the e-mail, UCLA tells you specifically to scan it into the computer. In order to keep it under 5mb you need to use black and white or greyscale. They don't expect the secondary to be super high quality if they stated this. It is not a big deal, especially if you are still following the directions they originally gave.

If you scan in black and white (not color) the file won't be super large.

In all actuality - UCLA tell you that you can attach any of your research publications onto your supplemental application - and some of those publications might be very large files with many pages - so if you attach those publications - it makes the entire secondary application super large.

You don't have to print out the supplemental and scan each page as black and white like how UCLA instructs you to do so - doing that is such a waste of time - and makes the supplemental application look so messy and dark.

Find out a way to type directly onto the PDF file and save it digitally - and then simply email the supplemental. Find a good friend who can help you with this. Do this soon!

All i'm saying is that if UCLA really expected all applicants to send a non scanned pdf to them, they would have said so in the secondary application. The 15 page application scanned into the computer was less than 1mb. Also, you don't need to actually scan the publications into the computer as well. If you are using adobe acrobat pro, you can just add pages to your scanned pdf (ie. You will be able to just add a pdf version of your publication to the end of your application)

They are expecting the applications to be lower quality. If they wanted everyone to submit a high quality version they wouldn't have set the secondary app to a read-only format. Expecting everyone to download a different program and mess with settings in order to change the save options is not something they would expect.

I don't understand why college have to make the supplemental applications so difficult to fill out. Goodness - NYU barely has a supplemental application.

I am using a mac too and I usually open these things on Adobe Reader. I wasn't aware preview lets you write anything on the document or export it to pdf...

Anyway, for those of you using Adobe Reader Mac version, I just updated mine to 11.0.06 and apparently you CAN fill it out and save it right on the Adobe Reader!

Yes!!! That was what I was trying to say! haha 🙂

I'm trying to answer their "why UCLA" question, but does anyone else feel like UCLA's website doesn't have much information? They mention their selective courses, research, and community service programs, but I can't seem to find any specific information on those -- they literally just mention those things in one sentence! lol

It's okay.....but if you're serious about UCLA you should get to know Westwood.....IMO it's a top 5 reason to pick UCLA for sure.

Wait - why do you say that? is Westwood super beautiful? Details Details Details!!!

How does Westwood / UCLA campus compare to UC Irvine's campus? Which one is more beautiful?
