Did I just screw myself over for matching in this program??

ok- so I'm interested in a certain peds program and eventually had gotten a call from the program director saying that their program would be ranking soon and to call back at given number for any more questions. I didn't actually call but sent a card to the interviewer and the PD a week later. In retrospect, I'm totally stupid for not calling. uggh-- do you think the program thinks I'm not interested and will rank me lower?

I don't think so - you did reply and if you truly feel that uncomfortable about it, you could always send a follow-up email (or call) expressing your interest. I'd count yourself lucky because you heard from a program! 🙂
As for myself, I have not heard from any programs and was not aware this was a common practice anymore. Has anyone else heard from any other programs?

Thanks RinRin,
Yeah, I sent them an e-mail even though I know the program has already ranked just to show my continued interest. Best of luck!

Yeah same. I haven't received any phone calls. Just a sprinkle of emails and snail mail......

Btw Bugabuster - I think your interest comes across whether you send a personal letter or make a phone call. Rinrin makes a good point - you can always call esp if you sent the letter a while ago. All the best!

You are totally overthinking it. If they want you, they'll rank you high. If they don't, then they won't. This idea that "showing interest" is somehow going to make a huge difference is, in my mind, very misguided. While it's unlikely to ever hurt an applicant, the benefit is nearly identical.

Think about it from the program's perspective. How many spots is "interest" worth on a rank list? Is interest worth picking a less qualified or less liked applicant? What's the benefit to them? Perhaps in an extreme case between an applicant who landed 7th on their rank list, and someone who felt their match was stretch, there may be some improvement in motivation, but internship is hard and people will trend towards their baseline eventually.

As a resident, I've received emails from applicants I've met who I absolutely did not want as a part of my program. Their interest in my program, no matter how superlative, is really not going to sway my opinion or what I'm going to tell my program director. In a way it's possible that my comments will be even stronger in opposition.

Hello everyone! Thank you all for your comments. BigRedBeta, I totally agree-which is why initially I did not think it was a big deal to not leap onto the opportunity to call. But as the match is approaching I think I'm starting to overthink things. Thanks again! 🙂

I didn't reply to any emails, snail mail, or phone calls. I mean most ask if I have any questions and I really don't . I hope its ok but I already sent personalized cards to everyone, some right before their card came so I don't know what else I can say.
