So I was just reading the AP thread, and while I happily did not bother with any AP exams for the sciences, I did happen to get AP credit for an intro to English Lit class and a basic writing course (so two total writing classes). I thought I was all gravy thanks to this until I read that med schools HATE AP credit. I didn't take any other literature courses in college, and while I did take a technical writing class and a few humanities classes where I had to write a lot (well, really just Medieval History I), I don't know if they'd count. So what should I do? Just call the offices of each med school I want to apply to?

My other problem is Orgo II lab. Back in the old days I took Orgo II lecture, and the lab conflicted with a major class so I took that other course instead (I had no interest in medicine at the time). Now when I look at pre-med requirements, they all want 'organic chemistry with labs.' I feel dumb for not having looked at this while I was a graduate student, but here I am. I do almost have a PhD in a lab that does a lot of organic chem (though I personally am not a chemist), so I don't know if I can sort of substitute that experience for a canned undergraduate lab course.

I don't think it'll matter as much for an English class. I don't know if med schools "hate" AP credit but they probably wouldn't consider AP credit for biology (used in place of Introductory Biology) very rigorous.

As for Orgo II lab, it depends on the school. Did the schools explicitly say they wanted two semesters of lecture and two semesters of lab? I'd call and ask. From my experience, two semesters of lecture and one semester of lab has been sufficient at many schools.

😕 Where did you read that?

Enroll in class at a local community college or reputable online class while you're applying. You don't need to have your pre-reqs completed until you matriculate so this shouldn't be an issue at all. But yes, don't bank on any AP credits counting for any pre-req.

I would recommend calling the schools you're interested in instead of asking people here or reading things on school websites. I didn't take Gen Chem lecture in college because of AP Credit (just took a semester of Gen Chem lab freshman year), and but did take one semester of Biochemistry (no lab).

None of my schools cared. Technically this was "unacceptable" for one of the schools I was admitted to (I was one credit short and the system told me this on my secondary), but I emailed the admissions office as soon as I received the secondary and they ok'd it.

Yeah, I know this is the right answer. Thanks!

Some schools will be lenient about ap courses. I know USC accepted me and said it was okay that I was under the physics requirement (they said they didn't accept ap credit but I had 3 classes in physics credited by my undergrad for these ap tests) and even sent me written notice that it wouldn't bar my matriculation.
