so when you move to dental school did you fly out before to pick a place or move there, get a hotel for a few days and then find some place to live?

Yes and to find a job for the wife. worked out well.

You should find a place before you move there. If you move there first, where are you moving in to??? Also, housing is a pain in the butt and you should get it out of the way and get your home set up before dealing with dental school.

Looking online and such is risky. Places we were sold on online were holes. In scary neighborhoods, run down etc. It cost more to fly out but may be worth it. Or talk to people who can be trusted to give you an honest opinion (other students.)

We took a huge risk and didn't visit the place before we sent in our deposit, but the past resident was a dental student and sent us TONS of pictures and told us a lot about it. We definitely would have visited, but we didn't have time because the landlady wanted to start renting 3 months before we were planning on moving (so we moved early, since it was such an amazing place.)

If you don't know the renters/landlords or it isn't a student, I would DEFINITELY go visit it in person. The problem with staying in a hotel right before is that you may become too eager to find a place and lower your standards. It's one of those things where the extra cash is an intelligent investment.

research online as much as possible, try to contact current dental students. then fly out and get the place. see it in person, and the surrounding area. some of the best places are long gone by the time school/orientation starts. take your time and get the move over with b/f the chaos begins🙂

My husband and I couldn't afford to fly out to look for housing so we had to trust internet searches and information we were sent from the school. We spoke with a few people from the area to get advice and everything worked out perfect. We also were able to talk to other students who were going to be in the class and had the resources to visit the area to look for housing - we relied on their opinions from their visit to help us.
You gotta do what you gotta do!

BUMP, I'm wondering if you guys flew out to check out the place? I'm a 500 dollar plane ticket away.

For the love of God, dude. If you have something to say, start a thread, but PLEASE stop bumping these threads that are over two years old.

I flew out to Boston for about 4 days just to look for apartments. Apartments on paper and in person are two completely different things. It's important to get advice from students about where to live around school. I know a couple people that got apartments without visiting them and then were surprised to see that it was difficult to get to school from home.

Definitely go out there and look for a place.

In some cases they are beneficial.

I think I will try and get out to Boston, then.

Why would you start a new thread if it is hasn't been archived or pruned?

Reo, that sucks dude, but Im sure you could browse the net for pictures or ask the owner to take some for you and send. You set on Tufts?

i'm struggling with this question myself. even though i'll have to take time off work, i'll probably fly down and check places out.

i'm relying on internet and phone contacts for now, but plan on flying about a month or 2 before just to be sure ($300+ for sure....ouch).

I found an apartment online and didn't see it until we moved out. It worked out well, though we did just move over spring break into something nicer. You might be able to just do a 3 or 6 month lease and maybe find something nicer (if you're not satisfied) when you move out.

Hey small just curious on which apartments you recommend for colorado? I really like the ones at 21 Fitzsimmons ..... any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, Fitz. 21 is nice, I know a few people living over there. Haven't heard any complaints. Copper Flats seems nice, too. These are all close to school, so the convenience factor is also a big plus. The place I was in was called Huntington Ridge. It was cheap and pretty nice, but if I didn't have a family to think about/support I'd just pay more and live closer to school. There are some pretty nice places in Stapleton, too, but I don't know much about anything specific. Nice area, but of course more expensive. Right now I'm in Copperstone Condominiums. Most people own here, but it's really nice and quite, so if you could find a place for rent here I'd recommend it. It's about 5 miles/15-20 min. from school, though.

Did that help at all? 😕

haha holy crap i don't believe this thread was brought back to life!! I haven't been on here for a long time.

FYI I ended up flying out and finding an awesome place. you could do it w/out flying out but it's a lot riskier not knowing your land lord and especially not knowing how safe of a neighborhood your place is in. there are a lot of cheap apts in some dangerous areas.

you want to be comfortable... especially your first year in a new city without knowing anyone. I think it is worth the plane ticket (maybe if you book in advance or something it can cost less?? I can help you search for good plane ticket prices if you want). Make sure you are getting what you pay for! You don't want infestations and things. Is the area safe? Are the pictures misleading b/c of the angle they take them at?

you definitely need to take a look at the places. i actually just came back from visiting an apt for rent, and the pictures they posted online were from a nicer unit that was already rented out....they only had crappier units available but it said nothing about that in the posting. i would have never came out to meet the broker had i know this was what i was looking at. so do not take an apt without seeing it firsthand or getting recommendations from a friend that has been in the area or lives in the same complex.
