I just received my Step I score back today and the two digit score was 82 and the 3 digit score was 200. I did so-so in my preclinical years with a few honors. I thought about anesthesiology but I am not certain if I'm competitive for that anymore. 🙁

What fields are still open to me?

you can still do anesthesia. gas isnt too competitive still. you may not get the best uni program but you will definitely get a spot, most places include foregn grads in order to fill. kick some butt 3rd year and get to know the peeps in the department well.

Most of them are still open (probably not derm, ortho, or ENT). Work hard in third year and you'll get into the field of your choice (including gas). Note I said work hard and not something like ~grow a brain. 200 is plenty smart...just work hard...most teams/attendings would take a bust azz hard working "200" over an average "230."

PM&R is also a wonderful field with a great lifestyle, plenty of procedures, and it is not terribly competitive.

BF is up to his cocky a$$ remarks again. 200 is a fine score...residency programs want a hard worker not an arrogant jacka$$ who got a 260.

All fields. Ace your rotations and rock step 2. Its that simple.

Yo Idio..

I must respectfully disagree with this. Aceing rotations is key, true, but step 2 has very little sway regarding residencies when step 1 is a 200. With a 200 on step 1, the poster will be out of the running for integrated plastics, derm, optho, ENT, and ortho. I'm not sure about gas, but I'm very very sure about the others.

Feel free to disagree , guys. I was thinking we should have a thread on here (sticky) for each specialty and the respective board score that was the mean for each last year.

from my understanding....unless you want to take step2 really early (before you even finish your core clerkship year) your SFmatch application for early-match specialities won't have your step2 score. besides this, certain specialties use step1 as a cut-off....regardless of other elements of your application. it's the easiest way for programs to make a first cut in residency applications. of course you could argue that you could submit your step2 scores later in the year to update your file at programs, but if you don't make the first cut this would obviously be a fruitless endeavor.
