Good evening! I have a unique transcript question/concern. My first 60 semester hours were all taken in a military setting over the curse of 12 months (40 credits in the first 6 months and 20 in the second 6 months) all with additional military duties/training on top of it.

It may sound naïve, however for those first 6 months I was unaware I would be receiving a transcript from a university for this program. We were told our classes were graded as pass/fail (By military Cadre) and were not informed of the fact that it was a 'joint contract through a university' until 6 months in. We registered for the university after the first 6 months of classes (40 semester hours) had been taken during which time I was unaware that the classes/grades/transcripts would be granted by a university ( a mandatory part of the program, apparently). I have separate military transcripts showing that these were taken in a military setting.

At 18 y/o, in a military setting, taking 40 semester hours in 6 months, I came out of that first half with a 3.4. During the second half, when I was actually aware that I was being evaluated by a university I received a 3.85 for average for the 20 credits during clinical rotations. Due to this, my current GPA at application will be 3.65. Without those first 40 credits, the GPA would be 3.81, without the whole program my GPA would be a 3.72. Those are not small numbers...

The actual question(s):
1) Do you think if I contacted the accrediting university's registrars office/the program advisor, I would be able to retroactively have these grades changed to P/F?
2) If I did number 1 and they approved it, would 60 SH of P/F look weird?
3) If I can't/shouldn't do this, how do I explain/address this on an application?

@Goro @LizzyM @gonnif Are any of you guys able to help address this or include a military ADCOM person who might know...

No one will care. I suppose these were not science courses (biology, chemistry, physics, math,, aka BCPM). You mention clinical rotations so I'll bet that most of the credits will be classified as HEAL (health) which is classified as AO (all other).

3) You might have some luck with a sympathetic letter writer (advisor, pre-med committee, military boss) writing an explanation of the program you were enrolled in and the way it is conducted.

1) It would be highly irregular to have grades changed after the term is over unless there was an error on the part of the instructor or the institution. Schools are strict about "locking" transcripts after the grading period ends.

2) 60 P/F units would not look too weird but, as mentioned above, it is highly unlikely you could get this change made.

I am definitely qualifying them as HEAL, that Is correct. Thankfully, My BCPM GPA is unaffected and remains a 3.98. When you say no one will care, do you mean that a 3.65 vs a 3.8 is not a big deal/difference (Obviously MCAT depending). If all else fails, would it be worth putting in a secondary response? Like, to answer "Is there anything else not in your application..." etc.

If your sGPA is 3.98, no one will care if your total GPA is 3.65 or 3.80. If you are a military vet, that will be icing on the cake, at least at some schools.

Don't put any excuse for those grades in an "anything else you want us to know" section. If taking those classes as an 18 year old in any way influenced your decision to pursue a career in medicine it could be folded into your personal statement but for the most part, your early grades in HEAL courses taken at age 18 while in the military (that military service will go into your "experience" section of the application with dates that will correspond to the dates in the coursework section of the AMCAS) will be seen for what they were.

Thank you, oh wise one. I guess I need to stop stressing over these things and get back to MCAT! Where is Goro with the Xanax?
