Hi everyone,

Rank lists are due on 2/26 and my husband didnt register for the NRMP until today. He is freaking out right now as he is worried programs may not have been able to rank him since he wasn't in the system and pretty much every program will have turned in their rank lists at this point. He never received a single email from any program telling him they couldn't find him. Do you recommend contacting every program he interviewed at on Monday to let them know about the late registration? How worried should he be? One caveat is that he is a re-applicant so is it possible they could find his NRMP ID from last year?

Thanks everyone!

No idea how the nitty-gritty works.

However, I am worried that if your husband isn't re-registered with the NRMP, then the programs may not be able to find him to rank him. @aProgDirector knows the process a lot better than I do, but if my hunch is correct, then your husband needs to contact all the programs he wants to rank ASAP.

And rank lists are due from programs on Feb 26th. Ours is done and finalized - if we had a candidate we loved who we couldn't find we probably would have reached out to them...

Maybe aProgDir can be of more help as I don't do the inputs at my shop so I don't know if you can find people without an NRMP number. If this isn't the case this is one of the very few times a post interview communication may be incredibly worthwhile

Thanks for the responses. I've told him to contact all the programs he interviewed at ASAP on Monday. Reading posts from a few years ago (including aProgDir), programs won't be able to rank applicants not registered with NRMP. However, I just find it hard to believe that no one has said anything to him about this. I wonder if his status as a re-applicant has any effect on things since NRMP numbers stay the same from year to year...

The entire application to residency community has said that you need to register, they are re-applicant, it's pretty ridiculous to miss this

I 100% feel for them because the cost of this could be huge, but it's not realistic to lay blame elsewhere

I sincerely don't want to induce anxiety but I would wonder if as a reapplicant he wasn't so desired by a program that they bothered reaching out to him about it...

I highly suggest that BEFORE YOU CALL/EMAIL PROGRAMS, reach out to NRMP and ask them about the logistics of this. You will have a better understanding of how to approach programs after you get information from NRMP. They may just tell your husband that he's in the system (via his old registration) and that they could have found him - this is the best case scenario. Then he can just send a friendly email out to programs calmly asking them something like "just wondering if you were able to find me in the system, as I have an old and new NRMP registration, and my new registration was created recently."

Did he interview at many programs? Or was it just a couple? Because if it was many, I'd find it hard to believe that they either didn't rank him at all, or they couldn't find him and didn't reach out to him. If it was just a couple, I'm not sure what to say - they may have not ranked him and that's why they are all silent about him not being registered.

In any case, I cannot believe that someone is a re-applicant and didn't take care of this early on... that's the most confusing part of this for me.

Again, thanks for the responses.

He interviewed at 10 programs, so it was a pretty good amount.

He is a re-applicant but I am a resident as well and I took care of this for both of us last year. And yes, I know he/we dropped the ball. I have been busy with residency so this possibility never even crossed my mind until he was registering today 🙁

That's a good amount of programs, so I'd be baffled if he didn't get ranked. Hopefully NRMP can give some good news on Monday.

There is no "we" dropped the ball. If someone has made it to and through medical school and is in the match it is incumbent on that person to take responsibility for completing the necessary paperwork. Please don't blame yourself.

Having been through the NRMP match and fellowship match, though, I can understand it happening.

Sorry if this is an ignorant question - are you sure he actually didn’t register or did he just not make an account, etc. on the NRMP website until today? Did he have to pay the late fee and so forth today? I ask because with 10 interviews I just find it hard to believe that not a single person didn’t mention something to him at some point. Was he interviewing at really big programs that interview tons of people or something like that? Or maybe it’s possible that he’s in the system somewhere from last year...I’d agree with calling NRMP and checking ASAP! Best of luck, I’m sorry you’re going through this.

I don't have anything to add. I don't know what happens if you're a reapplicant. I would assume he would be unrankable until registered. We had one unrankable candidate, we did reach out to them. They are military and were not released for the main match.

He wasn't registered at all until yesterday; he did have to pay the late fee yesterday. He interviewed at a mix of program sizes, some had over a dozen residents per year, others had as few as four.
