Hey all...

ok this might be a dumb question... but what's the big diff b/w JHU/Sinai Hospital prog and the JHU program. I know the JHU/Sinai is community hospital/univ affiliated. But at the end of the day, you still graduate from JHU right?!? and have similar attendings?!?

Why is one program more competitive thanthe other?!? HELP!

Don't forget JHU/Bayview

I will give it my best shot from what I have gathered from the PD's, residents, etc... I have talked to.
The programs you mention are "Community programs - University affiliated" meaning they are in community hospitals affiliated with the Hopkins system and their med students may occasionally rotate there. That being said, they are NOT the same.
1. No, you dont work with the same faculty, they are technically "Hopkins" but not the leaders in their repsective fields like the others.
2. If you are shooting for a competitive fellowship like allergy, cardiology, GI they are definitely not equal. "Hopkins" on your diploma does not mean much if you did not train at Mother Hopkins... i.e. their faculty can make phone calls, write letters, publish with you, etc. Your opportunities are limited coming from a community program. I saw this when I rotated at Mayo Jacksonville, a similar situation. The residents loved it, but assured me it WAS NOT Mayo Clinic Rochester and not even close. My third year resident went completely unmatched in GI, largely b/c he came from a community program. It doesnt completely put you out of the running, just sets you back some.
All this aside, is the clinical training inferior, absolutely not! In fact, it may put you at a slight advantage if you intend on coming out and going into the private sector by making more community contacts.
Hope this helps.

this comes up every year... and with good reason, it is confusing. i interviewed at some of them last year so i got the lowdown.

first, hopkins hopsital is obviously the most prestigious of them all with superior residents, training, and future career paths.

second, sinai is not really a hopkins hospital, it is just affiliated with most of the residents being foreign. i don't really know much about this program.

third, bayview is a fully owned hopkins hospital, 3 miles from the main campus, purchased 20 years ago so hopkins could grow. the campus is much larger than hopkins hospital and now supposeddly 30-40% of all hopkins research comes from this campus. from interviewing there, i would say that it is more on the community side than hopkins hospital, but not fully a community hospital. its kind of competitive to match there, but not nearly as competitive as hopkins hospital. the faculty are all hopkins faculty with many of the world famous ones living there instead of the main hospital now. finally, their fellowship match list is ridiculous, with almost half matching to the hopkins fellowships, and others matching at other prestigious programs around the country. also, the hopkins primary care residency and gim department is located there.

hope this helps.

Thanks so much! your advice is much appreciated! I suppose the same could go for the Mount Sinai hospitals in NYC!

thanks again!
