I'm a little confused on the differences b/w retail, hospital, and managed care facilities. I volunteered in a retail pharmacy that was located in a hospital, so would that be considered a pharmacy in a retail or hospital setting, or both?

And how are hospital and managed care pharmacy different? I looked them up and it seems somewhat similar. It said that managed care pharmacists will be involved in drug utilization review or drug use evaluation. Don't hospital pharmacists do that too? 😕 I'm so confused. Thanks for any help in advance.

The retail pharmacy in a hospital is usually called the 'outpatient pharmacy' of the hospital.

When people say 'hospital pharmacy'..I think they are usually referring to the inpatient pharmacy that prepares drugs for patients staying at the hospital. 'Clinical pharmacists' are those who have specializations and will make rounds with doctors within the hospital.

Managed care is likely referring to hospital setting--this usually means that you are going to a hospital that is partnered with your insurance carrier, like Kaiser Permanente.
