I took impression management as basically being changing your appearance to impact how others view you. Meanwhile, I took the looking glass self to be how society influences how we view our personalities and present ourselves. The theories seem very similar, so I'm wondering if I'm missing some subtle concept that distinguishes the two. Is it that looking glass self is based on how we change ourselves in response to actual feedback from society, while impression management is done as a preemptive measure?

Thanks so much!!

I think that impression management is based on verbal feedback, and looking glass self is more perception by "mind reading" or sensing how others think about us. Then with either of these inputs, we revise our behavior.
