Hi all. I'm sorry if this is an ignorant question, but can someone please explain the difference between an osteo residency spot and an allo residency spot?

i also have a question to add to that..i was told by the d.o. doctor i shadowed that there are 5 states that wont let you practice there unless you have done an osteopathic AOA approved residency (the d.o. doc did an allopathic residency)....is this true? if so, which states? i want to say one of them is west virginia but i'm not sure..thanks!

Some residencies are exactly the same and some are different. DO residencies have the internship year requirement, which can extend the length of certain residencies by a year.

DO residencies are also required to incorporate some level of OMM into the residency.

You have to be certified by the AOA, but this can be accomplished by either doing an AOA internship + residency, doing an internship and then an ACGME residency, OR getting the first year of ACGME residency approved as an internship.

So, no, you do not have to do an AOA residency to practice in these states.
