What the difference between organic chemistry lab 1 and 2? I have to take orgo 2 lab, but I haven't taken the 1st one. I have taken the class portion of both orgo 1 and 2. The lab is "only" 1 credit and lasts 4 hours once a week. There is one written and practical exam at the end of the semester, along with a lab notebook. It seems like "all" I need to do is do well on the lab reports and do the experiments. ??? Is orgo 2 lab hard?? I'm nervous!!!!

Why haven't you taken orgo 1 lab? It's a pre-req for orgo 2 lab at my school. You will be expected to know procedures/set-ups from orgo 1 lab, so that will be a challenge to learn it while the rest of the class already knows it.

The difficulty of orgo lab in my opinion depends on the TA you get. My TA both semesters was extremely helpful, giving us detailed guidelines and rubrics for what she wanted on the lab writeups. If you followed her directions (and did the lab portion successfully) you got an A. Other TAs were evil.

in my school, lab one was just a bunch of small experiments where we learn the basic techniques used in organic synthesis. In lab 2, we received an unknown organic compound and had to figure it what it was by following a flow chart and doing a whole bunch of techniques from the first lab.

Or you could skip the flow chart and just take a proton NMR of the stuff....

I think orgo 1 and 2 labs will be mostly the same at most schools, just running different reactions. At least at my school, the lab was setup so that fist semester we learned fundamental stuff and did classic reactions, then second semester we did asymmetric reactions and linear synthesis stuff.

Thanks! My plan is to do well on the prelab and lab report and try to be well prepared for lab.

This. I considered skipping orgo lab 1 and going straight to 2 because I could, but decided against it because first semester had simple experiments that taught you techniques that you would need for the second semester. And second semester your grade depended a lot on yield and your techniques. Lame and annoying because different TAs had different standards, but such is life. So I'm glad I took the first semester.
