Difference Between Prokaryotes & Eukaryotes?
Started by skyisblue
Pros don't have membrane-bound organelles. Euks do.

I'm reading up on this and my text says that Prokaryotes are cells w/o nucleus and Eukaryotes are cells with a nucleus and organelles......
I believe there is more to this than that.
Can someone please clarify?
Prokaryotes have a circular DNA in the nucleoid region while lacking a true nucleus. They also lack any membrane organelles.
Eukaryotes have a true nucleus and a nuclear membrane along with membrane bound organelles.
Both possess a cell wall. hope this helps.

they both possess ribosomes as well.
But euks have 80S ribosomes and pros have 70S ribosomes. Sorry for butting in, but I have a micro test on Wed and this is probably the only chance I'll ever be able to talk about the differences!

Cool! Thank you!

correct. Prokaryotic ribosomes are smaller (70S with 50S and 30S subunits) than those of eukaryotes (80S with 60S and 40S subunits)

and the obvious euk= meiosis/mitosis
cell wall =only in plants made of cellulose
prok= binary fission
actually no, cell walls are found in plants, fungi, protists and bacteria as well and not just in plants.
Also, note the difference between prokaryotic "flagella" and eukaryotic flagella...
What are fungi cell walls made of???? This compound is also composes the exoskeleton of animals belong to what phyla???
What is the term to describe a multi-nucleate hyphae?
Are lichen true fungi? What are the true fungi? Do michorizae (spelling) a type of true fungi?

Round 2:
True or False:
Desmids, Diatoms, and Dinoflagellates are motile organisms.
Dinoflagellates usually have two flagella.
All Dinoflagellates are phytoplankton.
Short answer:
The green algae, spirogyra, utilizes a special structure for reproductive purposes...what is that structure called?
Which type of green algae exhibits colonial behavior?

Chitin, Arthropod, coenocytic,
All you ever want to know about lichen.

Yes, all these organisms have cell walls, but are plants the only ones that have cell walls with cellulose?

yes. and fungi are the only ones that have cell walls composed of chitin.

thanks 👍 now back to some more reading....

If you guys keep this up, you might as well just read a textbook!
im alittle surprised no one said anything about centrosome/centrioles (sp?)....animals eukar has them but plans eukar dont.....(spindle thingie)
animal eukar invagination while plants do reproduction by cell plate (both mitosis...not talking about meiosis)

prokaryotes lack cholesterol in their cell membranes....euk. contain cholesterol
Yea, Prokaryotes have hopanoids instead of chloestrol which act just like chloestrol in memberane (increases flexibility and strength). Also, The cell plate in prokaryotes is made up of pharmagoblast (which are peices of golgi that have been clumped together in the center).
