Different DAT expiration periods and other stuff

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Call and ask schools in due time. Don't be concerned about it now. Definitely apply to that list of schools, though.

dantemac, thanks for the reply. I was just looking at the excel file you posted regarding OOS numbers. I was wondering if the different color means something like red means OOS unfriendly, green is friendly. Enlighten me please. Thank you.

I did a research of my own and found some schools that do. I'd like to share this for the people who have to wait a few years before applying like myself.

University of Michigan
University of Oklahoma
Indiana University
West Virginia University
University of Tennessee
University of Washington

I'm going to apply to all them listed above.
It's actually first time that some schools accept test score of more than 3 year old.
2) How many schools do you recommend to apply? 5? 10? 20?
I'd say if your GPA is good (above 3.5) , you should apply about 10. If it's mediocre 15 and if low 20+.
I spent a lot of time (2 and a half month just studying) and effort to get that score and I really don't want to take DAT again. Also I'm afraid that my science knowledge would be pretty much gone after training as a soldier for 2 years. But, of course, I'm willing to take it again if I need to.
3) Should I take DAT again when I get back in the States after 2 years?
Depends on the school, but most likely, you will have to retake 🙁
My friend with a brother who goes to a dental school told me that my score is good but I want to know just how competitive my score is. I'd appreciate your input if you're familiar with the topic.
Unless you have terrible GPA,criminal record or RC score below 17, your DAT scores should land you couple of interviews.

군생활열심히하세요.

Thanks, LaughingGas. I appreciate your input. Just curious. Are you saying that I'll need to retake it later because I won't able to apply to +10 schools? I have 3.4 GPA. Thanks again.

arnolddo,

I wasn't aware of schools accepting DAT score of more than 3 years so the number will vary according to how many school you can find that accepts DAT score of more than 3 years.
From what I've seen in ADEA dental school guide book, majority of them had either 2 or 3 years of expiration date for DAT.
The number of schools to apply is based on your personal preference. Assuming you want to apply 10+ to maximize your chances, I'm not sure how many of those school will accept the expired score.
I'm in the same shoes in a sense that, if I don't get in this year again, I will have to retake my DAT again next spring.

I gotta. That makes sense. Thanks for your input and good luck with your application!

I took the DAT in 2010 (September) and applied this last cycle.

BU and Loma Linda said my scores were too old. Most other schools were totally finw with my score's "age."

BU did have some weird rule about the MONTH you took it in... They considered your scores if you took it within two years (TO THE DAY) of December 1st. If I remember that phone call right.

Good luck!

Ah.. that truly sucks.
You didn't get exempt? I filed for exemption when I first came to the US, and have been fine since.
And I'm a Korean citizen/American resident, still.
