I am at a UC school, a lower tier one, and I am on the quarter system. The standard number of units that students take on is 15 units per quarter, and I am only taking 14 units next quarter. I feel like I am behind, but due to extreme budget cuts in California, I can not add another course to my load. However, I am managing a 4.0.

1. Do you think this will affect my medical school admission, from lower tier medical schools to the higher tier ones? My dream school is Columbia University and Brown University and I will thus apply to both of the medical schools of these fine institutions.

2. What is your opinion on the fact that the UC schools are going through an economical crisis and are cutting the number of classes and class size... would medical schools even know this?

I feel really behind with 14 units....

You'll be fine. Relax. Keep that 4.0 and with the extra time you have do extra curriculars.

Not to be rude, but you feel behind with 14 units? Not sure how Cali schools work but that's a standard course-load. Plus you're happening to manage a 4.0? Wowzers.

Just keep in mind these are 14 units on the quarter system and not 14 "semester hours"

I'm on quarters too, and there's nothing wrong with 14 if that's the amount you feel comfortable with. Good luck!

No. I know several premeds happily taking 12 each quarter/semester, especially since it means you'll have more time Though I don't understand why you can't add another course. I also go to a UC institution and average 19 units. Keep up the 4.0 🙂 you're doing great

I don't know, but to me it seems unlikely they'll take it into account even if they do know. My opinion on the economical crisis is that it sucks, because the class size increases are no bueno. I also will not be able to afford tuition if the tuition increase projections are actually put in place.

Taking 14 credits instead of 15 credits for one quarter won't keep you out of a good medical school. Work hard, do well in your ECs, and enjoy the little bit of extra free time you'll have!
