Any ideas of how tough UIC is compared to other dental schools? 🙂

I don't know how tough it is but I have heard that they are doing major changes to the curriculum (as in they are incorporating a PBL model and going to a pass/fail system) as for when this takes effect I've heard starting with the class of 2010 or 2011?

Do any current UIC students have any info?

I'm curious because when the board goes pass/fail and classes are also pass/fail ... what determines if one student is granted a specialty residency over another?

they told us that the class of 2010 will have an EBD curriculum. Evidence Based Dentistry, not PBL. However, when they describe the module system and the incorporation of EBD, it does sound very similar to PBL....

UIC is not going pass/fail. The professors said they think the students would become lazy in a pass/fail curriclum. They have said this numerous times. This is the same reason we have NO formal board prep throught the school. The administration said: students who didn't need the prep would attend the classes, while the lazy students (who probably need more help) would ditch. So they have left it solely up to us to prepare for boards.

If any of this has changed, please clarify this for me.

Thanks for clearing that up!

What exactly is "evidence based dentistry" (EBD) and how does it differ from PBL? With the EBD curriculum, do you think it'll still be block scheduling 8:00am to 4:30pm or will there be less class time and more independent study? Would the same classes (Gross Anatomy, Biochem, Micro, Histo, etc.) be taught through a didactic lecture?

Thanks for the insight!

those are all questions for the administration. If you are in the class of 2013 then don't even worry about it. If you're looking at 2014, then email the administration and they'll get back to you.
