So here's the deal. I just finished my freshman year of college. I went in a pre-med student and, after a fall quarter that ended up with a "C" in Gen Chem, a "C" in Pre-Calc and an "A" in English, I flipped out and switched my major to nursing. (Note: I got straight A's my last 3 quarters.)

I don't want to be a nurse, but I got scared. I want to be a doctor and I know I can be one. I don't doubt my abilities one bit. But I am scared nonetheless (I'm one of those people who fear failure big time.)

My parents and some of my friends tell me that I should just continue on with nursing and, after I get my BSN, see if I still want to take the pre-reqs and go to medical school. My issues with this are:

1) Some med schools aren't fans of accepting one-time nurses.
2) Why waste my time becoming a nurse if I don't want to be one?

Granted, I have cosidered the NP route...but ultimately my heart belongs to the MD.

What do you all think?

Being pre-med is a scary, stressful proposition; that's a feeling you're just going to have to get used to. However, your straight A's show that you can handle the academic rigor. Therefore, if you don't want to be a nurse, there's no reason to prolong this wretched process any longer than it already needs to be. If you're sure that doctor is the route you want, then go for it; you can always fall back on nursing later if it doesn't work out.

switch back to pre-med and this time work hard...

Then don't be. Switch back to pre-med. No point doing something you don't want to do.

Is pre-med even a major now? Switch your major (or stay) but take your pre-reqs and MCAT. If you must, have your personal statement address your choice of major.

Good Luck.

Same boat as you lol, I almost switched to nursing but I didn't want to give up. And you shouldn't either!!!!!!!!! Just study more and get a tutor if that will help.

Thanks for the advice guys!!

Although I feel "safe" as a nursing major, I know it's not my dream.

Looks like I'm back as a pre-med student next fall (psychology was my major, by the way). The fact that I can't let go of my desire to be a doctor is probably a sign that I'll never be happy with the track I'm on now...at least not until I graduate and hop back on the bandwagon.

Thanks again!

When I read the title to the thread I thought you were going into debt from major spending on BSN supplements lol...which IMO are worth the money
