Anyone want to chime in, I gotta buy a camera solely for clinic and I don't have a clue where to start. I dunno anything about photography.
I want the most bang for my buck. Something that will last about 5 years before I need to upgrade with technology.

Get something that can support a ring flash. They rap around the lense instead of sitting on top of the camera. I would think that a camera store could steer you the right way.

"ring flash" ??? I'm more lost than I realize, I already sense I'm gonna get taken advantage of.

Cannon Powershot sd 200 which sells for just under $200 or the sd400 model which is close to $270. The sd 200 is 3.2 megapixels , the sd400 is 5 megapixels. The more mp the better resolution. Usually it's hard to notice the difference unless you are viewing the pictures at very high screen resolutions. I tried both cameras and found the sd200 to be just as good as the sd400. Both cameras are very small, durable, and reliable.

It really depends on how much money you are willing to pay. A ring flash can be had on EBAY for about $80 and will provide a lot less shadows than conventional flashes that sit on to of the camera. Here is a link to one.

The problem is that they are more expensive after you combine them with digital SLR like the next link. You will get better pictures and be the envy of your classmates and possibly some of the instructors though. Now do you want to look profesional or just have a little point and shoot.

A quality camera and ring flash is going to cost a pretty penny.

Kodak has some ready made packages , ring flash and all. You can probably have a look at some of them, and source the 'parts' of the kit individually, works out a bit cheaper.

Last time I priced a good rring flash it was about 200usd.

My advise to you is that my a very wise old man told me when I said I wanted to buy a boat....

Get a friend who has a boat instead. 🙂

if you have 2K+ to spend, I would recommend the Canon EOS 20D (w/ the 100mm macro lens, flash, extra battery and memory).

or for a cheaper version, the Canon Rebel (w/ the same extras as above).

The Nikon Coolpix S4 has given me great results for case presentations.
It's 6 MP, 10X optical and the flash is located right next to the lens which has a really cool swivel design, instead of sitting on top of the camera.

It's not a clunky big camera and the design is really sweet. It actually can double as a personal use camera if you choose to.

It sells for about $320 on buydig.com I think..

Also try dpreview.com. There are discussion threads on there from dentists for specs when doing intraoral photography.
