Anybody have any experience in their own practices regarding a switch to digital path?

I've heard that it is happening, even outside of academia, but I don't know anyone personally who uses it.

What is the motivation for a hospital system to want it? To me it seems like extra steps, extra cost, and no extra reimbursement.

We are in the same position; the juice just isn’t worth the squeeze. We have had zoomers interviewing for opening spots asking about remote sign out and work from home, but as a bunch of old farts, we really are not considering this model, CLIA issues aside. I don’t think it has cost us applicants (yet) so I think it’s not a practical enough application at most places to be desirable. Time will tell but I think it’s mostly just AI-adjacent hype and CAP/academic spam.

We're part of a big regional system that is planning on going all-digital in the coming years. I'll get my first taste of it supposedly this September so we'll see. Can't say I'm excited about it - every digital system I've used is far slower than glass.

I was told we would be completely paperless in 2011. I bet we killed more trees this year than ever before.

So they will be making glass slides onsite and scanning all of them?

If you're hospital chooses to go digital without much input from pathology, would you consider it a warning sign that you are about to be outsourced?
I don't see much motivation otherwise.

I imagine the academics are going digital so they can publish their experiences and because they might get the digital systems for free or at a big discount as part of a marketing campaign.

That's the plan. According to those in charge it will better facilitate inter-hospital consults (which it certainly will) and research (likely will as well). Allegedly it will also lead to a more centralized histo department for all facilities, where all slides will be scanned and then we'll just sign out at our own facility or maybe from home, who knows.

We did go mostly paperless and now get no paper reqs. I only fill out a couple QA paper forms about histo each day. I rarely print anything, either.
