Hello everyone,

I know this is a broad question but any information would be much appreciated. I am starting up a small practice (3-4 operatories) and am having a difficult time finding any pricing information on x-ray systems. Those of you are savvy on the subject, please let me know what it would cost and any advantages/disadvantages you may know about. Any information on the following topics would be much appreciated:

Approximate cost of digital vs. traditional x-ray units
Advantages/disadvantages of some of the major digital x-ray companies (Dexis, Schick, Kodak, Sidexis, others?)
Cost differences among the major brands including software costs, sensor cost, etc.

Any information would help as none of the websites have pricing information and I don't really want to meet with each rep individually. Thank you all so much for your help.

In my opinion, The best X-rays system is DEXIS 🙂 worth the price... each sensor is about 6-10K but it takes amazing picture and you can directly open program from Dentrix appointment program,( just click on sensor and you ready to take image) In our office we also have it attached to the Panoramic/ cephalometric equipment. You can just buy one and move the sensor around the computers in each operatory. You need computers in each room to be able to do this! good luck.. Oh, I know this because I have worked in tons of dental offices and have experience with almost all systems.. Dexis is best one because it's easy to understand and amazing contrast on pictures, easy to detect interproximal incipient decay. Do NOT get the wireless sensor that you need to develop in another machine because you can not see pictures right away.. its better if you take the X-ray and see it on screen within a second so if you didn't get it right you can retake without wasting valuable time.

I agree with Navy. You'll get better info on dentaltown. That being said take a look at all the major brands and the cost of ownership for a 3-5 year period (software, hardware and warranty) (compare apples to apples). There may be a considerable cost differential. I looked at Dexis, Schick and Kodak three years ago. There was a $30,000 difference in the three year cost of ownership with very little difference in quality or convenience from highest two lowest. I have a 5 op office with two full time hygienists and two sensors serve us well with a digital pan that has bitewing capabilities.

Best sensors in terms of reliability IMO is KODAK. They are like the Volkswagen of Digital Xrays, you will get a lot of mileage out of them, and still be buying from them if you need to replace their sensors or pan units. I'm pretty sure they are the industry standard.

In terms of Digital versus Traditional. biggest difference is efficiency and savings in time and materials with the Digital. Time is probably the #1 factor, specially if you are a busy office.

Don't worry about the extra cost on the Digital, your return of investment will be better than Traditional over time, and you can depreciate the cost towards your income if you are the owner of the office.
