I was offered an interview at PCOM in January, and when I called, the very nice woman in admissions said that she had an opening next week-- which is better than January because I would find out everything sooner. However, I work for a politician, and my job can be very demanding. I have to work the day of the interview-- and it is important. I asked my supervisor and she advised me not to even bother to ask my boss could I be excused.

In my heart, I would quit just to go on this interview. But in my head, I know I need my job if only for a little while longer. I can re-schedule for January, but I'd rather go next week.

What should I do?🙁

I would wait until later in January if you absolutely need to keep your job. However, if you feel you can find another job to sustain you until school starts, then go for the interview next week. I don't know why you'd want to continue working for someone who doesn't care about your future. Sounds like a real a$$ to me.

If you think you might have a better shot if you go sooner, and if you can find another job that will satisfy you, maybe going would be better. Ask yourself what is more important: your job or finding out sooner. Since I know how stoked you are to get an interview after being disappointed by the MCATs, maybe sacrificing a job isn't so bad compared to getting in. But if it doesn't matter when you interview (other than knowing sooner) and you really need to keep this particular job, then there's no problem with waiting, other than the waiting part.

My work tried to pull that "it's important, can you reschedule" crap with me, and I flatly refused. Nothing would stop me from doing what I need to do to get in.

I am guessing there are more spots available now than there will be in Jan., hopefully increasing your chances of getting one. I'd go now if at all possible. Maybe if you haven't mentioned it to your boss yet, you could just happen to get sick that day 😉

Wow. You work for a politician that will not let you off work in order to go to a medical school interview?! Must be a republican.

I would say that Any Good Man or Woman would realize that you are not leaving for that day to do an idle task, but rather you are Going TO GO TO MEDICAL SCHOOL... Repeat after me... I am going to med school, I am going to med school...

i Managed a team of coleagues for a while and I admired the ones with the tenacity to speak up and say that they desired something... the ones that were to cowardly (not referring in any way to you) i did not respect and so I eventually fired them... they were more of a threat than the ones whom I knew what wanted...

Good Luck...

in my opinion, your future is more important than any day at work.

go for what is best for you.

I'd go. PCOM is rolling admissions and the committee meets once a month. So, essentially I'd take this to mean you have a better chance going now (at least you know you would make the jan committee meeting) or even dec...as they told me at my interview that they will meet at or a lil before the 15th. Waiting til january could quite possibly mean not being reviewed by the committe until February. I wouldn't risk it for a job that I plan to leave.
