We never learned anything about this in school but I've read on some forums of patients complaining of severe tolerance, addiction, abuse and withdrawal with dimenhydrinate. Anyone care to share if they've seen this in their patients?

When I worked at a psychiatric ward, they told the patients who were there for drug addiction that, if really serious about recovery, then avoid all diphenhydramine- and pseudoephedrine-containing products. Specifically, they told these patients to avoid OTC drugs ending in "PM" or "-D."

You don't see a lot of abuse of dimenhydrinate because of its anti-cholinergic effects. You don't want to be constipated all the time.

True but that never seems to stop the opiate addicts. Of course, I'm sure you get a much more euphoric high w/ opiates than dramamine.

Many of them take it along with their opioids to enhance the effect - when I worked at the methadone clinic, lots of the clients took a minimum of 100 mg dimenhydrinate with their meth. One client took at least four or five of the 50 mg tablets, washing them down with 100 mg methadone in Tang. Another two clients, brothers, bought 2 bottles of 100 tablets weekly when they picked up their methadone carries.
