Direct vs Indirect restoration [whats the diff?]

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
inlay/onlay are considered indirect.

If you go to the DT forum you will find tons of threads about which is better. Basically the Cerec onlay beleivers vs the direct composite crowd.

You pretty much nailed it. Direct restorations are done by inserting filling material directly into the tooth, whereas indirect restorations are fabricated outside of the mouth.

Approved materials for direct restorations are amalgam, composites, glass ionomers and resin ionomers. Materials for indirect are all-porcelain (ceramic), porcelain fused to metal, gold alloys, and base metal alloys.

Inlays and onlays are classified as indirect restorations.

I don't think that is entirely true. Different circumstances call for different approaches, even if one does favor CAM-CAD machines.
