Disadvantaged Status?

I'm not sure if I should fill in the Disadvantaged Status section or not...I was assaulted in my freshman year and decided to press charges, as this person turned out to be a serial assaulter for 2 other individuals. The trauma from going through the procedures to press charges with the police triggered a lot of stress, PTSD and depression (which I had been clinically diagnosed with by my psychiatrist). So this really pulled down my marks substantially (from 80s to 60s) in my sophomore year (when I had to repeat it - see below for explanation). My marks have been at above 4.0 for the past 2 years afterward though, so it shows I pulled through this experience and recovered.

Also I received a concussion in sophomore year and had to withdraw from school for a semester (which I explained in a later section of the AADSAS app)

Thoughts?

Yes, but don't try to oversell it and blame it all on that. Just say those events contributed to it. Make sure to state how much your grades improved afterward.

Is it a disadvantage to not have the opportunity to be able to receive a private education?


Is it a disadvantage to have to go to work while in school, knowing that a lot of other students do not have to, but yet I still have to compete with them?

Is it a disadvantage to be a parent while on school?

Is it a disadvantage to be a parent, and work while being a student?

Is it a disadvantage to have received financial aid while in college?

Is it a disadvantage to to receive any gov't help?

Although the article is geared towards med school and AMCAS, I think it works for dental as well. Basically, if you feel that you have been or are at a disadvantage in some way, you are given a space to explain. Whether the adcoms agree with you is their decision.

If you do not truly believe you have had to overcome significant disadvantages/hardships, don't try to fill in the optional space because you think it will help you. Just be grateful.

If you don't feel confident in your reasoning of being disadvantage then, you will be torn apart.

I would be careful bc they may think youre not mentally ready

andreadds is correct. However, frame your disadvantage as an advantage. If you feel it has made you mentally stronger and capable of coping with the difficulties that lie ahead in dental school, then that is what you talk about. In addition to the situation that put you at a disadvantage.

In this case, would it be better to explain this in the "background information" section and not apply with Disadvantaged Status? I'm still not sure what applying with Disadvantaged Status really means... (e.g. Would they flag your application under a different group of applicants for Disadvantaged Status?)
