Given my childhood (0-18), should I consider myself "disadvantaged"?

Should I consider myself disadvantaged?

I'm having difficulty deciding if I should use the status, because there are a few things that won't add up in my application... Here's why I would be considered financially disadvantaged (ages 0-18).

  • My family was periodically homeless. We lived in a shack for a year... w/o running water or a tolliet. Another time we were in a homeless shelter. And then we spent one year in a motel much later in life.

  • I began working at age 15 and contributed to the family income... groceries and taking care of my brother while my mom was at school and work. Pretty much a latchkey kid.

  • Our average annual income (ages 0-18) for a family of 3 was probably between 25K-30K because my mom worked her way up the nursing ladder... CNA-->LPN-->RN-->BSN-->ARNP.
So that last bit is where I will have a discrepancy... My mother is an ARNP with a couple of Master's degrees, but that did not occur until I was actually in college. (Lol, we graduated from the same university together 👍) I also never received need-based scholarships because she married the year before I attended college... Increasing our annual income from ~40K 3 people to 90K for 4.

I do not consider myself socially, educationally, or medically disadvantaged - only financially. It's just very obvious that my disadvantaged status may be questioned because one of parents is a practitioner.... Your thoughts?

I am actually very similar to you, except my mom never attended college. I say include it in the essays where they ask you about being disadvantaged. Maybe add in some traits that you have because of your past and how you can relate to patients by being empathetic versus sympathetic, etc.

Edit: I just saw your name. Is your family from Latin America? I learned about the Quechua people when I lived in Ecuador last summer.
