Hi guys,

I just got my score- i got a 185. Really disappointed, since I want to go into surgery. I'll have a ton of research + some publications under my belt when I'm done. I'll have excellent recommendations. Wondering if I should take the exam again.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

If you passed you cannot take the exam again. That being said all hope isnt lost. It seems like you are dedicated to the surgical field. You have tons of research and good letters which is a big bonus as some people don't have these things. Best advice would be to do extremely well on step 2.Are you a AMG? That is also a huge plus both in terms of receptivity from residency programs as well as in the resources available to you to pursue your goal.

In that case improve on step 2 and utilize the resources afforded to you at your school such as talking to your school's advisors and program directors.Things might look better than you think once you overcome the initial dissapointment with your score.

What sort of score should I be looking to get on my Step 2?

Also, any advice on the other kinds of things (other than research and letters) I can do to bolster my application?

Thanks so much.....

I would try to get 220 and above, obviously the higher the better. That would show you have a good grasp of the clinical aspects asked on the exam and would somewhat mitigate the impact of your step 1 score.Plus its an attainable score. Get excellent grades during your rotations especially the surgery core. You have a lot of things goin for you if you can improve your step 2 score you should be ok.
