I'm about to start shadowing an ER physician who I found through the iMentor web site. I'm currently 15 weeks pregnant and I wasn't planning on bringing it up but now I'm starting to wonder if I should, since it might be a safety concern? I am hoping to build a relationship with this doctor and hopefully get a LoR, so I'm guessing he's going to put the pieces together sooner or later since I'll probably be showing in a month or so. Thoughts?

Yes you should tell. It won't be a big deal unless you don't tell and something happens.

congratulations,
i shadowed a D.O primary care physician when i was seven months pregnant. when i was searching for a physician, I didn't disclose that i was pregnant, but it wasn't a problem. He was very nice about and treated me like a regular student. The reason I didn't tell him before hand is because i didn't want to make a big deal out or want the doctor to think I was looking for special treatment. My advice is if you think shadowing the physician might affect your pregnancy I would tell him. if not let it come up casually in a conversation, either way it doesn't really matter.

I've never been pregnant, it's a physical impossibility for me, being a guy and all... Disclaimer over, here are my thoughts...

First, you may be over thinking this just a little bit.

Second, unless you are exposed to something that could complicate the pregnancy or endanger the health of your child, I think that it's no big deal not to say anything. But I would say something early on, just so you can avoid one of these situations. Suppose someone comes in who cleans litter boxes for a living?..

Third, if you are planning to build a relationship with this doctor, I would bet that it will come up at some point. I have shadowed a handful of physicians and pretty quickly end up with just pleasant conversation between patients.

Last thing, congratulations! 🙂

You should tell him just to avoid the awkward elephant in the room. Additionally, you may be in situations that require you to take extra precautions above the normal. For example, if they're shooting xray, he may ask that you stay a little further away than normal for your own safety and that of your baby.

It certainly won't inhibit you at all and I can't see that it will hurt you not to tell them. I see no reason not to, though.

Thanks to all for the responses. I think I'll go ahead and tell him when an opportunity presents itself. I'm sure it will be a bit awkward no matter how I handle it but I might as well get it out of the way before I'm so far along that my "condition" is obvious.

Just tell them straight up:
"I just wanted to let you know that I am pregnant so we can take extra precautions if potentially harmful situations arise"

Its really no big deal and won't be awkward.

I think you already got your answer here. Just wanted to say congrats on ze baybayy!

Thank you for the wording advice, that's perfect!

Thanks! 🙂 We're pretty excited.

congrats!! Its better they know in case you start getting morning sickness (basically anytime sickness) so they understand if you need to dip out from time to time. You're nose is probably going to get super sensitive, so have fun with all the lovely ER smells!
